Book Description

July 1, 1999 Michael Brein's Travel Guides
#Michael Brein's Guide to Munich by the U-Bahn shows travelers how to go to Munich's s top 50 visitor attractions by U-Bahn (subway), rail, tram, and bus. The guide shows which transit to use, which lines to take, which stops to board and exit at, and, using about 30 detailed mini-area-walking maps, shows exactly how to walk from these stops right to the visitor attractions. Additional nearby points of interest are also indicated on these mini-maps. An ultra-large (very easy to read) official map of Munich's transit system is also provided. The Munich guide is concise, compact, and comprehensive and fits in your pocket (leave the bulky books back in the hotel room!). Michael Brein's Munich guide is part of the world's first and only travel guide series specifically designed to show travelers how to sightsee the top 50 visitor attractions by public transportation in a variety of the world's most visited cities.#

Another most unusual and also very clever guidebook to come into the marketplace, is "Sightseeing by Public Transportation." In all my years in travel, I've seen some offbeat things, but when I got a copy I was hooked, fascinated and wondered why no one's done this before. -- On the Road with John Clayton, July 16, 1999

Know Before You Go with $5 Transit Guides. Detailed maps of public transit systems are often hard to come by until you reach a destination. The guides cost $5 each and include a list of a city's 50 most popular places, as well as walking maps. The big maps are the schematics used by the cities themselves. The series began with the Oahu bus system. The publisher, Michael Brein, has added London, Paris, Barcelona, Berlin, Madrid, Munich, Prague and Sydney. Amsterdam, Washington, D.C. and Vienna will be added this spring. -- San Jose Mercury News, January 16, 2000

Off the Map. If you want to get to know a city like a local, it helps to travel like one, and free public transit maps don't tell you how to get to the fun stuff. For $5, try one of Michael Brein's double-duty city transit maps. -- New York Post, August 24, 1999

Sightseeing by Public Transportation Map Series. Assiduous and budget-minded trip- planners might want to include these maps as reference materials for their next trip -- San Francisco Examiner, August 9, 1998

Subway Series. The Metro, U-Bahn, Underground and other modes of public transit star in a new series of guides created by Michael Brein, a Ph.D. in social psychology with an interest in affordable travel. -- Consumer Reports Travel Letter, November 1999

1.0 out of 5 stars useless map, March 2, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Michael Brein's Guide to Munich by the U-Bahn (Michael Brein's Travel Guides) (Michael Brein's Travel Guides) (Map)
Contrary to what you may think this is not a map of Munich. It is a map of of the U-bahn and S-bahn system, the same as you can get at any ticket selling point. On the back there is a list of main sights by stations, which I found quite useless. In fact it hasn't helped me even once during my visit to Munich, for the following reasons:
1. Munich is quite a small city and many of the interesting spots are within walking distance from each other. A list of sites by underground stations simply doesn't make sense.
2. Some of the suggestions are quite strange (for example taking a bus to the Alte and Neue Pinakothek - they are within 10 minutes walk from two U-bahn stations - why isn't this fact mentioned in the guide?).
3. In every U-bahn station there is a detailed map of the nearby area. So it's very easy to find your way.
My suggestion is: buy a good street map of Munich instead of this guide.

1.0 out of 5 stars Proved to be Useless, June 27, 2005

This review is from: Michael Brein's Guide to Munich by the U-Bahn (Michael Brein's Travel Guides) (Michael Brein's Travel Guides) (Map)
This "guide" really proved to be useless. The only sight we needed it for (everything else is within walking distance of the city center) was to get to Nymphenburg. But the instructions were so obscure that we got better info from the U-bahn travel center. Save your money.

This review is from: Michael Brein's Guide to Munich by the U-Bahn (Michael Brein's Travel Guides) (Michael Brein's Travel Guides) (Map)
Front side of map is the MVV Schnellbahn-Netzplan, the S-bahn and U-bahn routes. Map is color coded and easy to read. Author has numbered specific sights which are described on the reverse side of the map. Reverse side has 2"x3" detail maps of the U-bahn station and the nearby point of interest. Includes BMW Museum, Englischer Garten, Oktoberfest, Marienplatz, Viktualienmarkt, Hofbrauhaus, and Neuschwanstein. Well worth the $ 5 retail price.
