5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking, November 12, 2004
This review is from: Michael Collins: Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I was flipping through the movie channels on the TV, when I came across the movie "Michael Collins". I just caught the tail end of it, but the music stayed vivdly in my mind. I rented the movie so I could watch all of it, and I immediately knew that I had to buy this soundtrack. In my opinion, the best song on the CD is "Funeral/Coda". Every time I listen to it I get goosebumps. Elliot Goldenthal truly outdid himself and the vocals by Sinead O'Connor are splendid. Every song on it is worth the money. Absolutely beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant soundtrack for a brilliant film, August 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Michael Collins: Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Of all the soundtracks I own, this one has to be one of the best. Sinead O'Connor's vocals on this album are both haunting and intoxicating. She was the right choice for the vocal compilations. Her recording of "She Moved Throught the Fair" is now a standard part of the songs in her concerts. Elliott Goldenthal's instrumentals appropriately fit both the theme and setting of the film. Tracks such as "Home to Cork" and "Winter Raid" convey much of the emotion the film expresses while Michael Collins is fighting the British and trying to secure peace in Ireland. Those who are fans of Celtic/Irish music should enjoy this soundtrack very much. Those who enjoyed the film will want to own the soundtrack just because...well, if you are at least part Irish, you'll understand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Goldenthal's masterpiece, May 9, 2005

This review is from: Michael Collins: Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Elliot Goldenthal is a fantastic composer; however, because of his modern musical sensibilities, his film scores are not easy listening -- they are often somewhat inaccessible and difficult to sit through. MICHAEL COLLINS is not. Written at the peak of Goldenthal's career so far in 1996 (between his 1995 FIRE WATER PAPER: A VIETNAM ORATORIO and his 1997 OTHELLO ballet), MICHAEL COLLINS is, along with FINAL FANTASY: THE SPIRITS WITHIN and TITUS, one of his very finest film scores. More accessible than TITUS and more human than FINAL FANTASY, this score is a powerful, tragic and frequently beautiful dramatic score, bookended by vocals from Sinéad O'Connor. This score should be on the shelf of any soundtrack collector and any lover of good music. This is Elliot Goldenthal's filmic masterpiece.

Runtime: 47:13 (43:43 of score)

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fabulous Goldenthal score!, June 24, 2001
By
This review is from: Michael Collins: Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I am one of the biggest Elliot Goldenthal freaks you'll find. I haven't seen many of the movies that he has scored, but his music is so vivid, colorful, and beautiful, you can't help but be swept away by it anyway! Michael Collins is no exception! This is one of Goldenthal's more calm, contemplative, and powerful scores. It features all the orchestration elements that make him stand out, but it is a very solid, flowing score that features many great moments of music! This is another must have for any Elliot Goldenthal fan!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Soundtrack, Great Movie, December 27, 2000

This review is from: Michael Collins: Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I bought this soundtrack very shortly after I saw the movie in theaters four years ago. (I guess I'm slow to review things!) I still listen to it often and that should certainly speak to its staying power as a compilation of good vocals and music. Sinead O'Connor is fabulous. I'm not a huge fan, but no one could have done a better job, especially on "She Moved Through the Fair" and the opener, "Easter Rebellion". My eyes still tear up when I hear "She Moved Through the Fair" because I remember the impending doom in the film as it plays. This would make a good addition to your CD collection if you liked the film and/or you consider yourself a fan of Irish music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive Goldenthal, March 29, 2001
This review is from: Michael Collins: Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Goldenthal is easily one of my favorite composers, second only by David Arnold and pobably the best of Jerry Goldsmith. However, Goldenthal roars into this score in a way very much unlike his other works like Titus or Alien 3: it has heart and soul with-in arms reach. Normally, his works are loud, violent mismatched percussion and strings with between key brass but this has sad melody and song to it. It's something that is to be remembered and reveered.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful songs for a wonderful film, March 1, 2001

I'll admit, I'm a little unfairly biased towards any Liam Neeson film, but this one just blew me away, as did the soundtrack. It's beautiful, haunting, and conveys the emotions described in the film as if you were right there, fighting beside Mick. This film touched me in a way that very few films do, and the soundtrack only added to the moving epic that this film is.
