4.0 out of 5 stars Some Great Overlooked Crichton
Three Crichton novels done an enormous disservice by the silver screen. CONGO is a great variation on his recurring theme of technology run amok. EATERS OF THE DEAD, unjustly ignored for many years, is a rip-roaring retelling of Beowulf. SPHERE is a taut and engrossing thriller that grabs you till the very last line. 3.0 out of 5 stars Congo
I read Congo. It is a great book. It has an excelant writing technique. The storyline is terrific. It is pact with intense action filled parts. Even though it was fiction it seemed as if it could really happen. I couldn't quit reading until I was finished. When I was finished reading I wanted to go back and read the good parts over again, because they were so good...

Oddly enough, these three works actually require LESS intellectual gymnastics than his more lucrative works-- these function quite well as adventure/thriller yarns. If you want to go digging for thoughtful nuggest, they're there, but these are three novels that work very nicely as summer beach reading. Getting all three in one volume is an especially tasty deal.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Buy, If You Haven't Already Read Them, July 24, 2000
This review is from: Michael Crichton: A New Collection of Three Complete Novels: Congo, Sphere, Eaters of the Dead (Hardcover)
This collection houses three excellent Crichton novels: Sphere, Congo, and Eaters of The Dead. This volume is definately worth buying if you haven't already read these books. Sphere is one of his best books, the best in this collection. It is old-school science fiction with a modern twist! A must read. Also, Eaters of the Dead is an overlooked item in the Crichton canon, very different from his other books, but any MC fan will like it. It is a new reading of Beowulf (if you're into that). Congo is his classic novel celebrating it's 20th anniversary this year. All three books are must reads. That is, if you don't already have them. If you do, then there's no reason to buy this collection, as it offers basically nothing new. A must if you haven't though!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I have ever read!, October 28, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Michael Crichton: A New Collection of Three Complete Novels: Congo, Sphere, Eaters of the Dead (Hardcover)
When a spacecraft is found one-thousand feet below the South Pacific,a team of scientists were brought in to investigate. What they found in the spacecraft while living under the sea in an underwater chamber{Navy Built} was remarkable. Many events kept happening that changed the whole story.{You are going to have to read the book to find out what happens in the end}. I think this was a wonderfully written book. Crichton did a terrific job of making a picture in my mind. He explained the book so well, that I always knew what was happening. I never wanted to stop reading it.The book never got dull and things just kept happening. GREAT BOOK!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST BOOK TO BUY!!, April 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Michael Crichton: A New Collection of Three Complete Novels: Congo, Sphere, Eaters of the Dead (Hardcover)
Every single one of these books are the best book ever and now their being combined into one extroadinary book with a great cover and is put together greatly. I think Sphere is the best novel in this book but it is so hard to pick a favorite. The suspence in every novel is the spectacular and the monsters that are in every novel are scary and very creative. I love how Crichton combines science with creative monsters and non-stop suspence into one novel and now three of those novels are in one book! I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to be scared to hell by an excellent author! BY THIS BOOK, IT'S AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By A Customer
This review is from: Michael Crichton: A New Collection of Three Complete Novels: Congo, Sphere, Eaters of the Dead (Hardcover)
This is one of the best collections I've read in quite some time. I think it provides an affordable introduction to a wide spectrum of Crichton's work.

Highly Recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars All we need now is all his works in one, November 13, 2005

This review is from: Michael Crichton: A New Collection of Three Complete Novels: Congo, Sphere, Eaters of the Dead (Hardcover)
I loved Sphere and Congo. I read them when 3 years ago I was overseas in Africa when I was about 11, and was glad a picked them up. I had read previous books, such as Jurassic Park and The Lost World, as well as The Adromedia Strain. In all truth, Sphere scared me senseless, I ended up reading all of it in one night because it was too frightening to put down. Congo is another book I bought just so I could re-read it over and over. I have to say that the movie just doent do it justice, just cant capture the pure emotion of the story, the feeling of assembling the parts of the story, what has been described in your head, then having that moment when it all comes together. The spoon-fed images version does not work. I picked up Eaters of The Dead yesterday, and cant wait to start reading it after I finish Traitor General by Dan Abnett.

I like this writer and I find this is an interesting trio - Congo-
how change in habitat could effect animals, Sphere - mystic UFO
creation and the last one about the old Europe: How a well educated traveler from the East found who Vikings are and how they interact with each other and foreigners. If you like me like Michael Crichton this book is for you.
