Book Description

February 1, 2006
10 years of decks, thoughts and theory!
For over a decade Michael J. Flores has been using the internet to write about Magic: The Gathering. As the game has grown so has Mike's voice. Today he is one of the game's leading theorists and deck designers. He writes weekly columns for two different websites, including the official site of the game, provides color commentary for the game's webcasts.
For the first time since Mike's output is being collected into a print collection that starts in 1995 and continues through his 2005 work. All of his seminal theories and decks are included in this massive 700 page tome; from 'Investment' to 'How We All Learned to Break the Rule of Four' to 'Silver Bullets' to 'The Philosophy of Fire'.
If it appeared on the old Usenet boards, The Magic Dojo, Neutral Ground, Brainburst, or Star City Games it is all collected in "Deckade" with new commentary by Michael J. Flores and introductions by some of the top names in Magic.

A Unique History of Magic August 20, 2010

If you are interested in the history of Magic: the Gathering at all, then you should purchase Deckade ASAP. Deckade is essentially 10 years, and many hundreds of pages, of articles about Magic from the mind of Mike Flores.

The entries here span the range from tournament report to deck tech, from set review to talk of high-level strategy. Mike's sharp wit, surrounding cast of characters, love of the game, and evolution as a strategist comes through on every page. There are countless awesome articles compiled here. Some of my personal favorites include Investment, Who Comes in Ninth?, The True History of PT Junk, Return of the King, Magic: the Intangibles, and of course the classic Who's the Beatdown?

I own the physical Deckade and have read it many times. I frequently pull it out just to re-read and article or two, and then find myself reading tournament reports late into the night. The content is fantastic, and I would give the physical copy of Decade 5 stars - but I give the Kindle version only 3. There are two major shortcomings: the price and a missing table of contents.

Personally I have no problem paying $25 for a book like this, but I know that for a lot of people that's very steep. I've never even paid more than $10 for any one book on my Kindle, so this is a pretty big step up. As for the missing table of contents, this is just completely inexcusable - and makes the book much, MUCH more difficult to enjoy. I want to be able to skip around and find my favorite articles easily, not be forced to slug it out with the Kindle's search function and my own memory.

Hopefully there's some way for them to fix the table of contents issue, and I'll gladly revise this review!

First off, the actual content of this book is first rate. I own a paper copy and was very happy to see this book on Kindle and immediately bought it again. It contains most of Mike Flores writing back to 1995. The earliest stuff can be fairly forgettable (usenet posts and so on) but his later writings are among the best pieces on Magic ever.

However I am very disappointed in the Kindle version. Its very difficult to navigate throughout this book. Its a large collection of articles but its a real pain to try and find a particular article as there is NO table of contents or navigational aids of any kind. It is essentially nothing more then the contents of the paper book dumped into one long continuous stream. To add insult to injury the utterly useless paper table of contents is also included.

As a Kindle book this book isn't worth its price which is a real pity given the quality of the writing.

Fabulous review of Magic! December 7, 2011
If you are interested in the history of Magic and love great writing this is the book for you! It is a book you will return to again and again which is why it;s such a good idea to have it on Kindle. The hard copy is rather bulky to carry around.
