Book Description

2 and up
One of the world’s great picture book artists presents a delightful collection of playtime rhymes, illustrated with characteristic brilliance - and offering easy-to-follow instructions for playing along.

In this sumptuous volume, leading children’s book illustrator Michael Foreman showcases scores of the best-loved, most exuberant action rhymes, each one acted out by an appealing little bear and a colorful supporting cast of children, animals, and others!

This beautiful book is bursting with more than seventy rhymes, including:

A sailor went to sea, sea, sea

Here we go round the mulberry bush

Hush little baby, don’t say a word

Old MacDonald had a farm

Ring-around-the-rosy

The farmer in the dell

The itsy bitsy spider

You put your right arm in

And, oh yes - the actions to accompany these rollicking rhymes are spelled out at the back of the book, so there’s no excuse for not joining in!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K-An impressive collection of songs, rhymes, and activities. Old standards such as "This old man, he played one" are side by side with lesser-known selections such as "Two fat gentlemen met in a lane." An abundance of illustrations adds to the fun, with combinations of characters from zoo, wild, and farm animals to 18th-century farmers and Kate Greenaway-style young ladies dancing or frolicking with modern-day children or with highly imaginative personified creations (a scarecrow, snowman, and the man in the moon). The watercolor-and-pastel spreads sometimes offer clues as to the upcoming selections. A golden teddy bear appears randomly throughout and children will have fun spotting it. Instructions for some of the activities are appended, but there is no indication in the body of the book which ones are included. Since many of the pieces are songs, one can't help but wish that the music were provided. Still, this is an entertaining and useful book for storytimes or one-on-one sharing.
