This review is from: Michael Franti & Spearhead - Live in Sydney (DVD)
Michael Franti is an absolutely amazing performer; his poetic lyrics and and catchy tunes will delight any lover of music. I encourage you to see him live (with Spearhead, of course), and you'll see just what I mean. His "Yell Fire" album and his documentary ("I Know I'm Not Alone") will make you a believer. This dvd is fantastic....Franti really knows how to energize his audience, and his band members are equally talented. "Every Single Soul" will give you chills, and I just love "Rock the Nation" and a studio video of "Ganja Babe". One of my favorite dvds ever.

This simply is an excellent concert, filmed in Sydney. Spearhead, fronted by Michael Franti, is an extremely talented group. The band engages the audience on a very intimate level, giving and receiving energy. Each band member has his time in the spotlight, from bass guitar and keyboards to beat-box MC and percussion. Franti, of course, stands out as the one around whom all the action takes place. This concert will make you smile.

This review is from: Michael Franti & Spearhead - Live in Sydney (DVD)
I have been following Michael Franti since his band The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. Their KILLER song was "Television, The Drug Of The Nation." and let me tell you, that was awesome, but man-o-man, this man has continued to seriously evolve over the years.
He has emerged from the stiff cocoon of an angry political activist with savvy beats and rhymes - to a fk'n world citizen dedicated to empowering people and spreading a message of love!! Oh, also, this man truly defies categorization. He appeals to a wide spectrum of people. I have turned numerous folks on to Michael Franti and Spearhead: in fact, practically everyone that I meet whom I really like, I say, "Have you heard Spearhead?" If they say no, they are going to get a mixed CD of his stuff. One woman who I worked for, she is 60 years old and hip - she now LOVES Spearhead ---> She goes around the house jamming to the funky funky songs of Spearhead's CD "YELLFIRE!" This music embodies what it could be possible for people if we were to do the work to transform our relations. Franti inspires us to be better than we been being. (huh?) - Essentially, the message is we are ONE WORLD -- you know, the one we live in together???? Franti never denies that we have serious issues to work on before we will know peace with each other, yet Spearhead's music looks to the POSITIVE side and lifts us up. He is the present generation's Bob Marley, but he is more of a funkster than a reggae artist (although his music embodies reggae at times). In his songs Franti talks about how much work we have to do, yet not for a second does he preach or allow the music to be dragged down into being "political" or "activist" --- no, this stuff is wonderful, challenging, and FUN music with a message that is undeniable: We Are All One. Franti possesses an uncanny ability to be with people of all shapes sizes and colors. In his film "I Know We're Not Alone," he traveled completely unauthorized, into the heart of the Iraq War Zone in the midst of Bush's war - with nothing but a guitar over his shoulder and a camera crew in tow. He just walked around with a smile for everyone he came in contact with. The people he met couldn't help but love him; He bonded with them and was able to be in their world and in their experience, even though he spoke not a word of their language; this man is not shackled by ethnicity or national borders. Listen - when you put this DVD into your player, make sure it is turned up "LOUDY." If you are able to, get good and toasted on a fat one before hand -- and above all -- be sure to move the coffee table and clear the floor, because you WILL be dancing like a silly person, just like the people at the Sydney concert. This is music that MOVES you! ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
