great book,
This review is from: Michael Jackson (Music Icons) (Paperback)
This is a great positive book about Michael. There was some information I had not seen in other sources as well as pictures I had not seen before. It is written in English, French, and German.

I am disappointed in Luke Crampton's handling of this book. Perhaps my complaint is due in part to the timing. Released 9/28/09, it is one more in a glut of books designed to take advantage the memorabilia buying frenzy after this artists' death. In comparison to other chronicles on Michael Jackson's creative work I find it marginal. It lacks originality.
The author's attempt at making this book a visual and narrative biography and his introduction, laced with enough Media fashioned and willfully ignorant opinions warrants an immediate return & refund. The Awards and Charts History is not as comprehensive as it should be given Luke's credentials as Managing Director of Original Media, "the world's most comprehensive source for popular music history data". The photos are excellent, but I did not buy the book for the photos. If you are looking for an excellent reference on Jackson's creative works, I recommend "Michael Jackson For The Record". If you are interested in a pictorial chronically reference, I suggest Michael Jackson Vault: A Tribute to the King of Pop 1958-2009, Ebony Special Tribute and/or Life Commemorative: Michael Jackson. I have yet to find an objective biography on Michael Jackson which is not filled with prevarication and personal opinions presented as facts, I have no recommendations.

I was delighted that even though the book indicates it is a paperback, it is the hard-cover paperback. I was a bit disappointed with the book, as it does not reveal any new information on Michael. Just a repeat of what most of the other standard books are saying. Some of the pictures are different in that they are shots you may have seen of Michael, but from a different angle. The most disappointing was that the book is in three languages. It would be a small book if it wasn't. I may not have noticed that before I purchased the book. If you are only looking for a book or two that encompasses everything Michael, this would not be the book for you. If you are a total MJ fan and want to own everything written on him, then it is worth the purchase at this price.

Quality of manufaturing is excellent. Beautiful photos, accurate chronology, written in three languages (English, German and French), all Awards and Recordings, complete Chart history, well written. I loved to go through his life in many photos with significant, small commentaries in chronologic way... Five stars. A good aquisition for his fans.

If you're not into reading thick, over long celebrity autobiographies, this is the book for you. It's nowhere near as detailed as "Michael Jackson: The Visual Documentary" by Adrian Grant. But I think it has details that book left out. If that's possible. I have not read MJTVD in awhile, so I maybe wrong. Anyway, it's not a love letter to MJ, but it also isn't a hate letter to him either. Unlike so many other books on MJ, that either over praise him or over trash him, this book balances it out pretty well. Keep in mind, this book is not a true autobiography on Jackson. It does not talk about everything MJ has done. It's more about his entertainment career, but his scandals are also covered. So is his charity work. It spans from 1963-2009. The last page is about his memorial service. This book is perfect for young MJ fans and fans who are not into complete autobiographies. It's also perfect for causal MJ fans, which is not me. lol
Michael Jackson Fan forever. |
