Simply the best book on beer I've read yet. Really informative, historical, pictorial, and well written. Has that classic Jackson dry humor. I just couldn't put this down; this book just about covers it all when it comes to Belgium and beer! I particularly enjoyed the chapter on the lambics and the trappists. Anybody that is into Belgian beer like I am, this is a must read. This book now in its sixth edition is fully updated and Mr. Jackson even goes through and describes how each brewery has changed since the first edition he put out. R.I.P Michael Jackson.

I used this book as a guide to find restaurants, breweries and obscure beers during a trip to Belgium. It was successful on all counts, despite not being written as a travel guide. I mentioned the book and Michael's name at a few of the places I visited. The proprietors and waitstaff immediately knew who I was talking about, and remembered him with fondness. Michael is the real-deal, not writing from a distance but from immediate and personal knowledge.

Even before I visited all the Trappist monasteries in Belgium I have been a big fan of the many Belgian beer styles. This book is an excellent guide to beers you may have already tried and ones you already understand and appreciate. Not only that, but it's beautifully laid out with outstanding photographs.

Many books written about specific beers or breweries have short descriptions of a paragraph or two. They are usually about brewery history and beer sensory profiles. This book gives more 'legroom' to each beer and brewery. Many pages are filled with personal accounts and tidbits that, after reading hundreds of books or articles on beer, are really the diamonds in the rough that keep you reading more. I like to randomly read parts of this book so I have not finished it but like an excellent beer, that just means that I will be savoring it for some time to come.

Im an avid Homebrewer and i love this book. While this is not a instructional brewing book, it is a detailed, educational, and interesting book on one of the greatest beer cultures of the world and has helped me to become a more knowledgeable and creative Homebrewer.

What a wonderful book! Anyone who enjoys a Belgian brew should enjoy reading it. The book discusses anything you could want to know about the brewing process, the brewing traditions, types of beer, the breweries, the individual beers themselves, and a bit about Belgium's history and how it influenced beer making. Michael Jackson was obviously a man who loved his work.
