Book Description

8 and upMatt Christopher Sports Bio Bookshelf
Michael Jordan. The name conjures up images of buzzer-beating jump shots, gravity-defying slam dunks, and precision ballhandling. For over a decade, Michael Jordan has been showing the world how the game of basketball should be played. He led his former team, the Chicago Bulls, to six NBA championships and has racked up more awards than any player in recent NBA history. The winner of two Olympic gold medals, a onetime minor-league baseball player, and the most recognized athlete in professional sports today, Michael Jordan continues to make us believe that humans can fly. In this exciting biography, Matt Christopher, the number one sports series for children, goes on the court for an inside look at the triumphs and tragedies, the struggles and statistics, of superstar Michael Jordan. Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6. Christopher systematically describes Jordan's career, starting in high school and following through his college, Olympic, and professional days (with the stop off at baseball). The book ends with the Bulls' loss to Orlando in the 1995 season playoffs. Those familiar with the athlete's career will probably already know some of the anecdotes covered in this book. For example, there's the oft-repeated fact that Jordan didn't make the varsity basketball squad in his sophomore year in high school, and his trials as a minor league baseball player are common knowledge. Yet, many fans will find this clearly written title among the most satisfying of all of the Jordan biographies. Although the author mentions controversies involving his subject's gambling and the tragedy of his father's murder, he recognizes that what many sports fans want is the highlights of players' careers and meaty descriptions of their key games. On these points Christopher scores.?Todd Morning, Schaumburg Township Public Library, IL

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, March 26, 2002

This review is from: Michael Jordan: On the Court with (Matt Christopher Sports Bio Bookshelf) (Paperback)
James and Deloris met in high school after attending a basketball game. They married on Feb. 17, 1963. Michael one of four children was born. The youngest son of the Jordan household, baseball was Michaels favorite sport. One day his father put up two wooden backboards and baskets and gave the boys a basketball. They called it the Rack. Michael practiced often to try to keep up with his brothers. When in high school it was recommended he attend a basketball camp known as a Five
Star Camp. Education was always important to his parents, they knew that unless he was a good student all of his athletic talent would go to waste. In the fall of 1981 Michael enrolled in the University of North Carolina. After playing for three years there was little left for Michael to accomplish. He decided to turn pro and on June 19, 1984 he was picked by the Chicago Bulls. He made history and won championships for the Bulls and won consecutive MVP awards.

I liked this book very much. It is very hard to shorten in length the information this book has given me about the life of this great basketball star.

The saddest part of the book was when they talked about his father dying. From what the police could piece together James had apparantley pulled of the highway to take a nap and was attacked by two eighteen year old boys. They were later arrested and charged for the murder of James Jordan. Michael retired to spend more time with his family.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 star book, December 10, 2008
This review is from: Michael Jordan: On the Court with (Matt Christopher Sports Bio Bookshelf) (Paperback)
If you are a Michael Jordan fan and love the game of basketball then this book is for you. This is probably one of the best books Matt Christopher has written. In his famous writing style he tells the story of Michael Jordan from "The Rack" to his third and final retirement. It is a fast paced, action-packed, and fact-filled book that you will not be able to put down. It highlights information from when he was barely able to dribble the ball to many all-star appearances and many MVP'S. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to read about a hard worker and the best basketball player of all time. The story of "His Airness" will not disappoint you.
