Editorial Reviews

TIME BANDITS Young Kevin’s daydreams burst into astonishing and hilarious life when a band of time-traveling little men come crashing through his bedroom wardrobe and carry him off on an unbelievable crime spree, weaving through the greatest and strangest moments of history. The pint-sized plunderers filch from a neurotic Napoleon (Ian Holm), a dim-witted Robin Hood (John Cleese) and a heroic King Agamemnon (Sean Connery), leading to a showdown with the dark forces of Evil (David Warner)...all while keeping just one precarious step ahead of the wrath of The Supreme Being himself! (1981, 111 min).

A PRIVATE FUNCTION An ambitious couple and a V.I.P. (Very Important Pig) collide in his outrageous comedy of manners! During a time of extreme food rationing in England following World War II, one town’s upper class bends the rules by illegally fattening a prize pig for a feast to celebrate the upcoming royal wedding. When a timid foot doctor (Michael Palin, A Fish Called Wanda) and his bossy wife (two-time Academy Award winner Maggie Smith, A Room with a View) get wind of the plan, they seize the chance to climb the social ladder by kidnapping the pig…who has a few unpleasant surprises of its own in store. One of the most hilarious, critically-acclaimed British cult comedies of all time, this star-packed satire proves some people will truly do anything to get ahead! (1984, 92 min).

THE MISSIONARY Comedy legend Michael Palin (Monty Python’s Flying Circus) heads an all-star cast in this irresistible British comedy treat! In the early 20th Century, devout Reverend Charles Fortesque returns to England from his missionary work in Africa and, despite plans to marry his childhood sweetheart, receives a most unusual assignment: minister to the local prostitutes, located in the worst area of town. A wealthy married patron (two-time Academy Award winner Maggie Smith) offers to help improve his station, on the condition that he also minister to her… in the bedroom! A witty, delightful comedy of manners and misunderstandings, The Missionary delivers divine comedy to one and all! (1982, 83 min)

"Time Bandits" is probably Palin's most well-known work in the U.S., apart from Monty Python. But "The Missionary" was a wonderful, ground-breaking film for him and "A Private Function" has some great moments. If you prefer your humor a little more intellectual than most American fare (which seems to consist mainly of toilet jokes and sexual innuendo) then check out this collection.

My husband and I have always felt that he is an absolute hoot. These films are SO Michael Palin and we thought they were terrific. Everyone to their own taste.

Every since I laughed myself silly viewing this when it first came out, I have wanted to own it. This is it, along with two other films which I have yet to view.

The cast of APF is a treasure trove of British talent: Richard Griffiths, Maggie Smith, Bil Paterson, Denholm Elliott, Liz Smith, and Tony Haygarth along with Michael Palin. Written by Alan Bennet, it takes on class distinctions in a small town against the backdrop of continued rationing and the coronation of QEII, and a scheme to provide a feast fit for a queen to an honored few. Social climbing has never been so much fun!
