4.0 out of 5 stars Great post-Black Uhuru album for Michael Rose, January 29, 2002
This review is from: Michael Rose + Sly & Robbie = X Uhuru (Audio CD)
Seems some people think that this album is a new release which came out for the first time in 1999. I used to think the same thing. That is until I heard the "Car Wars" song which refers to "Mr. Bush."

Since Clinton was president at the time, I hypothesized that "X Uhuru" had to come out in the early '90s.

And I did some surfing and that appears to be true. I read that the album originally came out around 1991 and was called "Sly & Robbie Presents Mykal Rose: The Taxi Sessions."

I rate it around a 3.5 to a 4 because it has some solid, solid work here. But there's few songs here that move you like those classic Black Uhuru songs from back in the day. On later solo albums, Rose has some moving slower tempo songs (not necessarily love songs, mind you) like "Brown Eyes," "It's Alright," and "Strike it Hard."

But nevertheless, this is a great, solid album and you can't go wrong with Sly & Robbie. They lay down some creative, worldly rhythms here and Rose is sharp lyrically, as usual. And musically, it's arguably more intricate than what Rose did later, blending pop, R & B with reggae.

A must-have for any Black Uhuru/Michael Rose fans.

Chant higher,

Mykal Roze (the fan!)

5.0 out of 5 stars ROSE BACK TO OLD FORM, August 10, 1999

Michael Rose has had some pretty average releases since leaving Black Uhuru. Now he's back with his old killer rythm section Sly and Robbie. This record has some of the most ethereal jams this side of Chill Out. Michael Rose is back to form with a release that Black Uhuru fans have been waiting for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where Have They Been, April 18, 2000
This review is from: Michael Rose + Sly & Robbie = X Uhuru (Audio CD)
Finally, Rose has reunited with Sly & Robbie to rediscover the true sound that drove one of the all time greats, Black Uhuru. Rose's self titled release was good but his following releases lacked the backbone he has come to find, once again, in the cutting edge sounds of Sly & Robbie. I found all the tracks to be very fresh in the hypnotic fasion of old. 'Visit Them' and 'New York' stood out upon the first listen and I've listened to it once before writing this review.
