Editorial Reviews

This performance was recorded in January 2010 during the 30th Anniversary Japan Tour. On this tour, the Michael Schenker Group consisted of Michael Schenker, Gary Barden, Simon Phillips, Wayne Findlay, and Neil Murray. The band, in impectable form, blasts through a track list highlighting all stages of Schenker's career: from UFO and Scorpions hits, through MSG classic tracks, to his solo compositions.

Probably the best quality DVD release from those DVD's that are available of Michael Schenker. I should know - I handed a list of over 300 recordings of Schenker to his official website at their request. It is great to see Michael so ably climb out of his rough patch in 2007. One in the eye to those false prophets who keep saying "he's lost it". These false prophets come and go, but Schenker continues to overcome his demons again and again. Nobody is denying that he's had his demons. But, come on - people have been saying "he's lost it" from the beginning, when nothing could be further from the truth. Again and again and again, he rises from the ashes. He's made dozons of albums, all different to each other, and all brilliant. He rarely fails to turn out less than 4-5 classics per album. His "best of" collection is more than 24 hours in duration. The man is a musical genius. He wrote almost all the hits that made UFO famous, and invented most of the guitar-styles that make classic rock what it is today. Schenker IS classic rock - possibly the only man ever to really understand the genre, with very few exceptions. Whilst many UFO fans are also Schenker fans, a certain breed of UFO fan behave like fans of Stockport County FC who, briefly, had Maradona on their team. When he turned up, they loved him. When he left, they hated him. When he re-joined, they loved him again. When he left again, they hated him again. All this is pure cobblers. It has everything to do with tribalism, and nothing to do with musical assessment.

Anyway, to the DVD. The DVD contains a typical MSG set: mainly classics from the first four albums, but also three of his latest tracks (I Want You, A Night to Remember, and Dance Lady Gipsy).

This is a great addition to the MSG and/or UFO fan. Lots to like here with many songs from the first two MSG releases. The camera work and audio are very good. Sometimes there are some missed opportunities where the camera angle is absent from Michael's fantastic finger work, but they are not too annoying and the video quality is excellent. Highly recommended!

First I received it very quickly and packaged well.
Now on to the review - It is absolutely amazing - every song from start to finish, the quality is very well done (but i am not an expert on the production of a DVD) but it sounds and looks great on my big screen. Michael is in top form on this tour and looks very fit, Simon is amazing on drums, the quiet and subdued Neil is great on Bass, and I think the other guitar player is Wayne (Sorry i dont have it in front of me as I type this)he and Michael are very much in tune together, Gary's voice lends very well to Michael's playing and he sounds better than 30 years ago. its like the band had fairy dust sprinkled on them before they got on stage as they play as a very tight machine on every song. The crowd you can tell loves them and is on their feet through the video. Michael's solo on Rock Bottom is the best I have ever heard and I have Strangers in the Night, if you didnt know it was 30 years later you would think it was 1979, if you are a MSG/Schenker fan you have to get this as well as the CD. You will truly value it for your collection. Each member of the band also speaks about the tour and band, and their career, so it is reallt interesting to hear from them all. It truly is wonderful to see Michael looking so happy and so fit and playing so beautiful:) LOVE IT!!! MS fans lets all support Michael's efforts to bring us his passion in top form - if you love Michael you gotta get it :)

Hooosh! At last, at last... At last a Schenker concert is captured adequately in video. The 1981 show in Hamburg is also good, but hti sone here is simply amazing.

All the band is firing on all cylinders (to use an old cliche). The sound of Michael's Dean guitar is fantastic. Gary Barden is singing better than in the eighties, Neil Murray is bass player excellence itself, relatively modest and a little behind Barden and Schenker at the stage. Keyboardist/guitarist Wayne "Payl Raymond" Findlay does the job with enthusiasm. But man, that guy behind the drums... Simon Phillips is just a monster drummer. The guy knows everything. Just hearing/watching him play in this DVD is an experience in itself. The ultimate pro.

The extras are also good, although absolutely nothing "profound" is said. To watch Phillips says that he did not even talk to Michael in the recording process of 2008's IN THE MIDST OF BEAUTY is incredible (digital file transfers).

This is one of the best performances from MSG in quite some time.Being that they are well known in Japan, the venue was a great place to film this 30th anniversary.I have been a fan of Michael from the days when he was with UFO & MSG past & present, and I have to say this line up is the best he's had in a long time. The sound is excellent and filming crew is spot on! Very well produced DVD & extras complement this package! Long live the Mad AxeMan!
