Book Description

May 29, 1996
The past ten years have been good to investors. The combination of safe bluechip stocks and more volatile growth stocks has doubled the money of well-positioned investors in five years or less. Yet some experts say that the stock boom is nearly over, that the fabulous profits of the 1980s were a fluke caused by a one-time decline in inflation and interest rates. Michael Sivy couldn't disagree more: He sees another stock market boom ahead and tells you how small investors can do as well as the pros in the coming decade. In clear, simple language, Money magazine's chief investment strategist reveals how an expanding world economy creates exceptional conditions - and extraordinary opportunities. Which fields will prosper? Which will fail? Which new products and services are likely to turn the economy upside down? With his analysis of the facts and his street-smart rules of investing, Michael Sivy will show you how to use the trends to your advantage and select the best stocks for you.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

In the belief that "few people know the basic principles for building a portfolio and picking safe, undervalued stocks," Money magazine's Wall Street editor here intends to advise and instruct them. Sivy repeats the current canon of investing: diversification, self-analysis for risk tolerance, asset allocation, etc. While recommending that the small investor lean toward growth stocks, he also explains value investing (investing in out-of-favor stocks) and income investing. The latter includes bonds, which Sivy appears to include in all model portfolios. To give a feel for what makes a promising growth stock, he analyzes 37 blue chip stocks and 26 income stocks individually. He offers limited information on gold, real estate, and options. Sivy does a serviceable job of instructing the beginning investor in the basics, but, in general, this is a bland compilation with nothing especially timely. 4.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to common stock investing, October 29, 1998
This review is from: Michael Sivy's Rules of Investing: How to Pick Stocks Like a Pro (Hardcover)
Beginning investors looking for a little general direction will enjoy this book by Money Magazine's Wall Street editor. Sivy recommends active asset allocation as your stock strategy. In other words, hold stocks, bonds and other vehicles in general percentage ranges, and adjust according to your view of the economic outlook. Staying within your ranges will prevent disasters when markets turn. His book also covers growth, income, and value investing, and devotes chapters 10-13 to more advanced investing. It's an excellent primer for investors who want to get started in stocks, and also for those who have been primarily in mutual funds but now want to incorporate common stock strategies into their investing. 4.0 out of 5 stars Good for the beginner investor, July 9, 1998
This review is from: Michael Sivy's Rules of Investing: How to Pick Stocks Like a Pro (Hardcover)
Before investing, one must understand how the markets work and why stocks in particular offer the best vehicle for decent return on your money. Michael Sivy does a good job explaining common Wall Street jargon, making the market understanable. As well, he offers some stocks as good selections for a diverse portfolio as well as his rationale for these choices.

By no means should one attempt to follow his advice verbatim but instead one should try to see if one can begin to analyse the stock market and use the knowledge gained after reading this book.

Very well written, concise, and informative.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent survey of investing from 1996, September 3, 2000

This review is from: Michael Sivy's Rules of Investing: How to Pick Stocks Like a Pro (Hardcover)
I have been playing with stocks for one year, and have an interest in economics. Sivy's book provided me with a comprehensive overview of investing strategies. The author has a witty and readable writing style. The basics of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, foreign stocks, etc. are all covered. Also covered were the basic investing strategies, including value, growth, business cycle, inflation cycle, income. I suspect that a person with no background in stocks or economics would find this book challenging. This edition is from 1996, and contains some information that has been overtaken by events. Aside from this, I would have awarded this book 5 stars.
