Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The Sterns (Square Meals, etc.) contend that "the 'trend-setting' things that happen in the culinary worlds of New York and Los Angeles have little effect onand are of no interest toa huge number of happy, healthy eaters." One of the delights of their book is its sense of immediacy, as the authors, with humor and a spirit of adventure, journey to an Iowa cafe, through back roads past newly tapped maple trees to a New England sugarhouse, and to a Southern boardinghouse. The book is novel for offering not merely regional specialties, but also styles of eating, and each sectionEast, South, Midwest, Westis subdivided accordingly (for example, the East includes street food, bar food, deli, country store). The book may contain more recipes utilizing gravy and marshmallows than any other contemporary cookbook, and while it dutifully offers such favorites as Buffalo chicken wings, Chicago pizza and Philadelphia cheese steaks, specialties like Upper Peninsula pasties (tender, seasoned little meat pies from Northern Michigan's Finnish settlers) and Nevada's Basque soups and stews provide a balance of the unexpected. But even when a particular dish sounds awful, as the Sterns sometimes admit, the accompanying "geogastronomic facts" which the authors include in the belief that food is more enjoyable when something of its history and lore is knownmake it hard to ignore. The recipes are easy to follow and often flexible, and mail order addresses are included. Illustrations. Better Homes and Gardens Book Club alternate.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Regional Cookbook!!, September 22, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Jane and Michael Stern's Coast-to-Coast Cookbook: Real American Food (Hardcover)
Do you like to explore the USA? Do you love regional restaurants? Do you like to cook? Then you'll probably love this cookbook! It's too bad it's so hard to find, because it is without a doubt my favorite cookbook, maybe even my favorite book ever. Jane and Michael Stern, long time food writers of note, have gone out of their way to find local restaurants which feature regional specialties and then replicate the recipes so we can cook "like the locals". From clams in New England and New York delis in the North, through real Buffalo Wings and Cincinnati chili, Pot Likker and Hoppin' John in the south, to Western steak and eggs, they take us around the USA through our stomachs. Where else can you find Basque inspired garlic-laden recipes from Shepherd's Hotels in Nevada? My favorite part are the recipes from the Navajo Indian reservation, with the Hopi lamb stew Nok Qui Vi being the best of the best! If you track this book down and like to cook, buy it immediately! Then have a blast adding new dishes to your resume and dreaming of your next road trip. Happy Eating!

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Cookbook, December 3, 2002

This is my favorite cookbook of all time. I lent my copy to a friend who has some restraunts and he lent it to one of his chefs and I never saw it again. It is currently out of print, although I don't know why, so I was overjoyed to find a used copy on Amazon.com. Almost every recipt in this book is a keeper from Doe's Eat Place Shrimp to the Yankee Red Flannel Hash. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. If you like to cook do yourself a favor and track down a used copy of this book.

I don't buy cookbooks, but I like food. This book turned me into a real Stern junkie. It's like travelling all over the country with them to the best diners and greasy spoons.

Now you can duplicate what they say makes American food great. I love the New England recipes the most, but everything's interesting.
