This review is in English for the benefit of those who do not speak French. The film itself, unless it has been dubbed, is in French.
Michel strogoff is a Russian officer in the service of the Tsar. Since he is a native of the eastern portion of the empire he is chosen to pass through enemy (Tartar) lines to deliver a message to a beleagured Russian command. He is betrayed and captured, his mother is killed and he is supposedly blinded, but is actually saved by the Tartar rulers concubine. He goes on to confront the traitor who is impersonating him and to save the city, and Russia, from the Tartars. Naturally he wins the heart of the woman who is his unwilling companion, and all ends well. Good acting and good story.

not as described,

Contradictory to the description of the product there are no English sub-titles. Movie by itself is phenomenal but only my children (they are speaking French) can enjoy it. Hungarian sub-titles are not very helpful.

I did not view more than the beginning when I discovered that it was not available in English sub-titles. I returned it and other than a restocking charge and the return postage, was given an immediate refund-

I've seen several versions of this movie and found all of them worth consideration.
If this DVD is played on the PC that can accomodate European formats, this film comes across very well. Jules Verne the renouned 19th century science fiction writer, wrote a very good novel about historical events that transpired during that century in eastern Russia. Russia founght the mongolian tribes in the East, while Americans found Indians in the West. Jules Verne captured the Russian empirial process, Russian culture - underlying feature of the hero and heroine. This is in sharp contrast to the later Soviet 'culture.' |
