soprano problems, January 22, 2011
This review is from: Michael William Balfe: The Bohemian Girl (Audio CD)
This is a really charming opera, with undeniably beautiful music that is wonderfully sung by the cast.........with the exception of Nova Thomas. She is, quite simply, not up to her assignment. What a shame!

Hard to take seriously., May 12, 2010
This review is from: Michael William Balfe: The Bohemian Girl (Audio CD)
I can easily understand the appeal of this opera to the Victorians. I can also hear in this the basis of a lot of G&S parody. The performances are very earnest, but I have a hard time taking any of it very seriously. Still a fun listen, and very instructive in non-Italian mid nineteenth century operatic practice. I just cannot imagine this playing on stage nowadays.
