This book is the catalog for a three-month exhibition held in Vienna's Albertina Museum and covers the entire career of Michelangelo as a draftsman, with 127 drawings shown (out of an estimated surviving output of 500 to 600). Rather than a collection of studies and essays on the master, the author chose to study each sheet one by one, with a trove of information and technical details, buttressed by marvelous illustrations (e.g.the studies for the frescoes of the ceiling in the Sistine Chapel) that help the reader-viewer to delve into the intimacy of the creative process of this universal genius.

One of the best artbooks recently published.

Without question one of the best art books in my library. The binding of the book is wonderful with heavy page stock and nice colour reproduction. What I didn't expect when I bought this was the depth of commentary and the numerous paintings of other artists to relate to influences by and from Michelangelo. The drawings themselves are fascinating...not just the anatomy but plenty of peculiar treasures, such as the man riding a giraffe - and yes, that is explained in the commentary. Buy it if you have any interest in art.

By buying this book, it's like buying Micheangelo as your life-drawing professor. If you want to learn to draw like Michelangelo, then buy this book and copy the drawings. It's filled with many large images of his drawings showing small details the create the form. You will not be disappointed by buying this book.
