Originally printed in 1953, this edition is the title's sixth incarnation. This update now includes color photographs of the newly cleaned ceiling frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. All the original black-and-white images also have been redone for this upgrade.

Review

'The book yields a stimulating overall view of Michelangelo's religious and artistic journey, full of terribilita and beauty, which is enriched and enlivened by the messages from easily missed details, including ornamental marks, significant expressions and expressive gestures.' (The Tablet)

This is an excellent resource if you are looking for a comprehensive collection of photos of Michelangelo's works. Text is minimal but concise; the main focus is on the works themselves on page after page of gorgeous black and white photos. The only real drawback is that I would have liked to have seen more color plates of his paintings; there are only a few, focusing on the Sistine Chapel paintings, with close-up details shown in black and white photos.

..most of the plates are in black and white and not of a very high definition. i also wished for more detail plates of the major works.
still, though, a decent value for the price.

This is an amazing book. The images are huge and extremly detailed. I am a novice sculptor so for me the close up shots of his work are an enormous benifit to my work.

I love this book. It is one of my favorites. For a long time I had been looking for a book on Michelangelo that showed some nice closeups and detail of some of his sculpture work. This book has that. It would add nicely to the collection of any artist interested in Michelango.

Excellent! This book (1964 edition) gives the serious Art History student or lover of Renaissance Arts a chance to examine up-close in incredible detail Michelangelo's genius as captured in his paintings and sculpture. The black & white photographic quality in the 1964 edition, appears to me, even more effective, than if the photos were colored. Several colored plates throughout the book are removable and suitable for framing as individual prints. This book taught me more than I learned taking Master level art history courses at a university in 2012. The text is sparse, but knowledge dense and placed at the end of the book thereby not distracting from the photographs themselves. This book is worth purchasing and preserving because as time passes we are losing so much knowledge as America continues to 'dumb itself down.' Please note: These are only my personal observations and I do NOT have a copy of this book for sale on Amazon or any other site, nor am I any type of 'authority', just a lover of art history.

As the others said, the large and detailed photos are great.
The plates are black and white. I think this might be the very reason that this book is attractive to me. There are color photos of the Sistine inserted in the beginning, clearly by the editors -- the paintings were not renovated in the author's time. To me, and I believe to many others, the black-white photos capture the true spirit of Michelangelo's work more closer than the new vivid photos.
Sincerely, I consider this book as the best one of its kind.
