Interesting background reading,

I love the works of Michelangelo, and what draws me to them, more than anything, is his talent in percieving emotions. THe varying faces of God on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, his wary but still formidable Moses, the careless Bacchus...one never questions his faces. Particularly, the eyes of God when he is creating the universe are stunning.This book tells the early story of Michelangelo, before he was MICHELANGELO. His letters don't always let you inside the man, but he is conscientious, thoughtful and courageous. The editors tell somethings about his life (writing between the lines) and that helps, but I would recommend a biographical reading of this great artist before attempting to draw his likeness from this. It is good, though, and the translation seems decent enough. I would also suggest reading this in one or two sittings. That way, you get the whole picture in one block instead of in many small pebbles. Frankly, his works tell his story much, much better. Truth-telling the great artist cannot escape, although perhaps they should. SocraT

A wonderful book. By reading his actual letters he sent and received, you get a very good understanding of how hard his life was.
