Pretty good tire,

It's a heavy tire but rolls quite fast on hard pavement. VERY poor choice for anything loose. gravel, dirt, etc. Performs very well under total bike/equipment/rider weight of about 270 pounds. No worries about pinch flats whatsoever.
Bought this for touring, on the rear wheel. Have a lot of weight over the rear wheel, and transfer a lot of power through that wheel. Rear tire wears about 3-4 times faster than front and it's a pain in the butt to fix flats (disc brakes plus panniers). This tire looks like a very good choice but running lighter tire in front. UPDATE: May 2011. I finally removed this tire last week. It handled an 1800 mile cross country tour with a total of almost 300 pounds, heavily biased to be over this wheel. NO flats during the ride. In fact no flats since putting it on, other than a thumb tack that got embedded in it last year. The tire lasted a ridiculously long time too. I got nearly 6,000 miles out of it. No tire I have ever used has lasted that long. I changed it when threads started showing up on the wear surface. Once again, it is a HEAVY tire, but rolls fast.

I have these in a 47c on my 29er and in 28c on my single speed.
The 47's have about 1500 miles of pavement, dirt, and gravel commuting on them with exactly zero flats using the generic brand tubes that came with the bike. I live in goathead country, so this is quite impressive.

Commuter Tires... So far so good.,

These tires replace my original Specialized Nimbus (reflector sidewall) tires. The Michelins are a bit lighter, should only be inflated to 73psi, but they seem to be a very good tire so far. Smoother ride, they look good and roll fast. These, were mounted with new Bontrager tubes on Alex and Sun rims. Tires have so far dealt with LA streets, road cracks, bumps, debris without a problem. Tires mounted easily on my rims.
Strange thing about Amazon Shipping. Tires ordered and shipped easily. However, they came in separate large boxes. Michelin tire web site is the place you should research to know what tire is best for you.... then check back on Amazon or another web retailer to find exactly what you want. Take particular notice of size availability. I use a 700x38C and this was available in my size. I run a Specialized Globe IG8, with rear rack/pack on a 17 mile round trip commute. I recommend these tires so far. I will amend this review if I run into problems. 12/28/2009

ordered this after comparing price wise to continentals, (Town and countries on my girl friend's bike have lasted a loooong time)
These hold the road well, roll easily, channel water in the rain and seem like they will last a good bit, though I doubt they will have the conti's longevity. great tire for the money. Edit: After several hundred miles commuting (mostly) in the rain, I like these tires even more. Great wet road holding and no flats yet even through some debris on the side of the road.

I just starting using this tire last month. This tire is much better than my last tire. First of all, I don't have to worry about my tire going flat. The grip on the road is fantastic. I could feel the difference with this tire the first time I rode on it. It gives me a very smooth ride. I would highly recommand this tire to anyone who is looking for a great tire at a great price.

Excellent All Weather Tire,

I commute to work everyday between 20 to 30 miles from Queens to Manhattan on New York City streets. My bike is a Montague folding bike with the manufacturer's original tires. I was getting 3 to 5 flats a week and switched to Armadillo which is a very heavy tire and did not get any flats. After a month I started getting flats on my rear tire. It was due to a bubble in the sidewall and the tire had to be replaced.
I replaced both my front and rear tire with the Michelin City. I have been riding it for 4 months and have had only 1 flat. The tire is fast and has good traction in rain. Note: I do also have tire liners. As a final note, in my opinion, these are great tires. They are excellent in preventing flats and fast on the road. They also ride well in wet weather.

I purchased these tires for my Trek FX hybrid/commuter/exercise bike. I commute by bicycle, but on the weekends, I ride trails for fun, usually averaging about 50 miles a ride. I've found these tires to comfortable, and if they are heavier than the Bontragers that came with the bike, it doesn't really hurt my ride. I abuse my 700 C wheels, riding on gravel and I gently hop curbs, but these tires don't seem to mind. Decent traction and high visibility are a plus as well.

As a commuter, the rear tire on my bike wears out in half the time of the front tire. Not a problem, so I ordered another Michelin tire for my bike just to have available when needed. This has proven to be a very good commuter tire... no problems, pinch flats or punctures (Los Angeles, Hollywood streets!) The 73psi max pressure provides for a smooth ride and I think the tread pattern works well for running through wet streets. The reflective strip is great for night riding and looks good in the day.
For the price, a very good tire. Seller shipped promptly and the tire was nicely packaged.

What a difference different tires make!,

I recently purchased a used 1999 Gary Fisher. It came with Heng Shin 26 x 1.95 knobby tires, probably good tires but not what I wanted. Even pumped up to the maximum PSI the tires gave too much roll resistance and were noisy. I am 61 years old and will never ride this bike off road or on dirt trails. I bought this bike as a commuter, on paved roads. This morning I put on my new Michelin City 26 x 1.4 w/ Avenir tubes and pumped them up to 75 PSI. I could have pumped them up to 87 PSI but I only weigh 175 LB. Gosh what a difference. These tires are quiet and have much less roll resistance. Exerting the same amount of effort I ride about three miles per hour faster. In that the tires are pump up to a higher pressure than my old tires the ride is a little rougher, but I expected it would be. In that I had the tires off I trued the wheels and adjusted the brakes before putting on the new tires. All told it took about an hour to remove the old tires, do some adjustments, and install the new tires. Not bad for a first timer, I guess. I would recommend these tires to a friend. The price was right and delivery was prompt.

Id' like to comment on some other reviewers comments:
"VERY poor choice for anything loose. gravel, dirt, etc." While I primarily bike on paved roads, to get to a paved road I have to go up a steep incline in my crushed stone driveway, ride 100 yds. on a very rough dirt shared driveway, and then cross a loose gravel shoulder. I just switched from 37mm hybrid tires with a typical tread to these 28mm tires, and see no difference in handling. Obviously, if you get into a long stretch of deep loose gravel you are into trouble, but so are you with any bike tire. "The Michelins ... should only be inflated to 73psi". The revered Sheldon Brown states that the pressure limits on a tire are the results fo a negotiation between the marketing and legal departments, and that tires are tested at double the stated upper limit. At 150 pounds I'm running 88 psi in the rear tire. and wouldn't hesitate using more pressure if I weighed more. I have no complaints with this tires, but so far only have a few 100 miles on them. |
