Slight improvement from the 2006, but mostly the same, March 24, 2007
This review is from: Michelin Red Guide 2007 New York City: Restaurants & Hotels (Paperback)
My review of the 2007 guide is very similar to my review of the 2006 guide.
Of this guide I like that:
1. It lists only selected restaurants. Most restaurants in New York are not listed; that is a good thing. Although, I think that selectivity is a huge plus (so I know where to go to spend my money), I don't think it goes far enough: In my experience a large portion of the restaurants listed could have been omitted.
2. Restaurants that are awarded one or more stars are about 50. That way you actually know which are the 50 restaurants in New York that are actually worth the often high price.
Improvements since last year:
1. Amount of information on food has increased, but only for the 50-odd starred restaurants. For those there is now a selection from their menus.
2. A new symbol (the big gourmand, called Bibendum in the Europeans versions of the guide) denotes restaurants that stand out among the others without quite deserving a star AND are moderately priced (a meal for less than $40). I think though that the "less than $40" limit was probably aiming too low.
Weaknesses:
1. There is still too little about food for restaurants other than the starred ones. And there is far too much about decor, the owners and other irrelevant information about the restaurant.

A wonderful resource, February 21, 2007
This review is from: Michelin Red Guide 2007 New York City: Restaurants & Hotels (Paperback)
I had the opportunity to spend last summer in NYC and the 2006 edition of this book was a lifesaver! I bought the 2007 edition as soon as it came out and was excited to see a number of changes that made the guide even better. The restaurants are organized in a much simpler way and the index is extremely useful. I go up to NYC regularly on business trips and this guide is a wonderful tool for picking out exactly where to take my clients.
