Three trips - ready for a new one!,
This review is from: Michelin Italy Tourist and Motoring Atlas No. 1465 (Michelin Maps & Atlases) (Paperback)
We have carried this book with us for 3 trips to Italy ('98, 99 and 00). It has been absolutely invaluable! We frequently prefer to use smaller, country roads away from the autostrada. Sure, we've gotten lost, but we were always able to find our way back, thanks to this book. Definitely worth its weight in gold (and definitely worth the weight in the luggage). Also a great tool for pre-trip planning. Guess we will buy a new edition this year for our 2001 trip. We did find a few new roads and extensions not in our "old" '98 version.

Invaluable if you plan to drive any distance in Italy,

You don't realize how spoiled we are in America with good maps until you try to buy maps for other countries. This is the best roadmap that I have found for Italy. We experienced a few problems, but nothing major. We used this map to cover a lot of territory in Italy. We went from the Veneto down the eastern coast to Ravenna and Rimini, then to San Marino and San Leo before heading to Florence, from there to Sienna and Pisa, then to Cassino on the way to the Amalfi Coast, and finally up the western coast and to Rome. We found every landmark that we were looking for, and a few we didn't expect. If you are planning to drive in Italy, you need to map. Of all the maps of Italy that I have used, this one is hands down the best that I have found. I highly recommend this product.

Language should not be a problem,

This is an atlas, not a travel guide, so there should be no reason for needing the various maps to be translated. All relevant text (Legend) is available in six languages, with English being one.

If you are seeking an atlas for bicycle touring, this one is good - though with limitations.Buy it in advance; tear out the pages you need. In short, Michelin (a French company) produces brilliant maps of France. Unfortunately, the maps they produce for other countries can be sketchy. The one for Italy is good (though not great). The roads are generally accurate but the precision (scale) makes it better for general use, rather than very specific curve-by-curve planning. One other nice aspect about Michelin maps is that they indicate camping locations. This is true for the Italian atlas, but be warned that Italian camping locations are mainly along the coastline and tend to disappear frequently. In all, it's definitely worth having; you *could* survive with this alone - but best supplemented with further research / guide material. Happy cycling!

I drove all over Italy with this map in 2006, it didn't fail us once. Our hotel was wayyyy out in the boonies, and it was difficult to find even with this map, but without the map we would have been doomed. Try finding a map - any map - in any store in italy - good luck! If you plan on driving in Italy, better have this map, it will save you hours/days of aggravation.

My daughter married a gondolier from Venice. I've been waiting 10 years for a decent set of maps of Italy. THIS IS THE BEST.Michelin Travel Publications produced a spiral book of maps for Italian travelers. It is like a MAPSCO. The maps are written in Italian, which is very important. There is no confusion... cities are printed in Italian, like the road signs.
