Great Single-Page Map!,

Michelin maps are great maps for touring. We didn't have one when we arrived in Ireland for our first trip. A local recommended we purchase one, and we were very grateful for the tip! The AA atlas of Ireland may have more detail, but, if you want a single-page fold-out map of Ireland (as opposed to a several-page atlas), I highly recommend this one. It has most of the roads (even minor ones) on it, and it shows sites of interest on it as well. Great map!

A Fantastic Map of Ireland,
By Sam "Crocheting Commuter" (Maryland) - See all my reviews

My husband, who has a fondness for detailed maps, absolutely adores this map of Ireland. Compared to the other ones we looked at, it was by far the largest and most detailed, showing the most towns and cities and roads on one map. Other maps only show you main cities and main roads and the color coding can be distracting. This map is clear and has a very extensive legend showing places of interest and historical sites.
We are using this map to plan our trip to Ireland. It's tacked up on the wall so as we look through travel guide books, we can find the locations on the big map and plan our driving trip accordingly. As for using this map while actually in Ireland remains to be seen. I doubt the size will lend itself to ease of use (unfolding it in a car might be a hazard) so we may get a small atlas for the actual trip. But for those with an affinity for maps or want a detailed map for planning your trip, this is the map for you.

This map is good for an overall, general view of the major highways, but we found it lacking in detail. We ended up on many smaller roads that didn't show up on the map. The size of the roads is also misleading. Irish roads are very narrow and winding. When we looked at this map, we had the impression the roads were much larger and that they covered quite a bit of the country. They don't. Even when you get on a divided carriageway, it will end unexpectedly for many kilometers before it suddenly divides again. The map looked good when I bought it, but the reality was very different.

We are planning a trip to Ireland and bought this to allow us to plan our route as we are not going on an organised tour.
It is perfect for this - quite big when it is unfolded so probably a bit awkward to manage whilst in the car. As we are getting feedback from travel agents etc. the map is detailed enough to indicate the locations that we are being suggested to visit. A very good reference point at the bottom of the map for each town in Ireland - this has been detailed enough for us to find where we are looking for. Would definitely recommend this product if you are planning a trip - a great way to get accustomed to the geography of the place before arriving.

This map was a very useful tool while driving in Ireland in November 2008. We had planned our routes with google maps before leaving home and this map gave us the details we needed to find all of the places we wished to visit as well as finding our way on the rare occasions we made a wrong turn. Highly recommend this map. The size was not a problem as we folded it based on the area we were in each day and it was the perfect tool for the navigator. The highways are clearly marked in Ireland and it was easy to find our way as long as we kept in mind the places we had to go through in order to reach our final destination.

Buy it on Amazon before you get to Ireland,

This Michelin Map of Ireland is the main map product that is sold at the Dublin Airport. Get it before you head to Ireland, you'll be glad you did. It goes handy with the Ireland Atlas.

Like all the Michelin maps I have bought and used for Europe, the Ireland map is clear, easy to read, and of a large enough scale (1:400,000, or 1":6.3 miles, or 1cm:4Km) to use for pretty much any type of driving vacation. It comes with a legend (in English, French, German, and Irish) an index of place names, a distances chart, city maps of Dublin and Belfast (both 1:120,000), and a small county map (roughly 1cm:40Km).

Errors Remain from Earlier Version,

I am convinced the Michelin staff have continued playing "Pin the Town Name on the Map." Errors in the earlier version remain, showing towns on the map mere miles apart in reality existing many miles apart; often in different counties.
Not a dependable map by any stretch of the imagination.

I read travel books, listened to podcasts and quizzed people who had travelled to Ireland. The common recomendation was to have a good road map before trying to navigate thru Ireland on vacation. Everyone agreed that the best map was from Michelin.
I ordered one. This map was better than anything else that I saw (AAA, travel agencies, tourist information sites). It also proved to be worth much more than its purchase price. Going to Ireland? Get the Michelin map. |
