4.0 out of 5 stars an excellent map, overall, August 22, 2000

We spent the last two weeks traveling by car in Portugal from Lisbon to the top and northeast corner of the country; over 2500 km.

This map was vastly better than the smaller maps we had. It worked particularly well in giving us a clearer picture of what the routes would be like. We discovered no errors.

It also contains an index of cities and villages.

Not 5 stars for the following reasons: many small villages not on the map. (To an extent this is unavoidable given that there are so many small villages.) Also, there's no cross milage chart.

Even more valuable would have been a chart of estimated driving times between major cities. It was all too easy to get stuck behind (very) slow moving trucks in the hilly areas. The 'N' roads, which look like major highways on the map, usually have just one lane in each direction. In addition, they can be endlessly twisty, leaving little opportunity to pass.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Map! True to Micchelin standard!, September 16, 2009

This review is from: Michelin Map Portugal 733 (Maps/Country (Michelin)) (Map)
Having spent a week traveling through Portugal by car (including popular tourist places, such as Obidos, Alcobaca, Batalha, Tomar, Evora, Sintra; but also less-traveled or difficult to reach areas, such as Castelo Almourol and Marvao), this map was a wonderful and trusted companion!

Descriptions of roads, villages, towns and distances were universally reliable and precise. The level of detail is wonderful, including (third-grade) roads to somewhat isolated places, such as the Almourol Castle.

We paired this map with pre-printed directions from Google Maps (which also proved very accurate) and in three days and over 900km of travel (on major highways and minor local roads, including one-lane barely paved ones) lost our way only a couple of times (for which we can't really blame Michelin's excellent map).

This map is a highly recommended tool for those who plan to travel in Portugal by car!

A side note to those car travelers - we found the Portuguese roads to be of excellent quality -- particularly true of the major highways (which are mostly toll roads and are relatively expensive by US standards, but the road quality, the well-organized rest areas and frequent gas stations, make the expense worthwhile).

4.0 out of 5 stars A Generally Useful Map, June 24, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Michelin Map Portugal 733 (Maps/Country (Michelin)) (Map)
I bought this fold out map for our recent trip to Portugal. I used it only when traveling from city to city. I found myself using the Michelin Spain and Portugal Tourist and Motoring Guide I bought in 2007 for our trip to Galicea in Spain and Northern Portugal.

The motoring atlas pages are bigger, so the maps appear easier to read. However, the disadvantage with the maps that are sections on one page is that the page break always seems to come at some critical point in the drive. For that reason the fold-out map had its good moments.

One thing decidedly lacking was a good map of Lisbon and its environs. Yes, there is a detailed map of the inner city, but the area outside Lisbon is shown as just a bunch of roads, no detail. Trying to make our way from the highway to our hotel in the Saldanha district was quite a challenge, and this map was not at all helpful in enabling us to reach our destination. (Poor/non-existant signage also was a culprit!)
