These maps are my favorite for touring. SO much better that stupid GPS screens that show you nothing. My wife and I love maps- right now we have spread 6 sections out of Austria, Italy, switzerland for our trip. The 1:400,000 scale is just enough to decide which routes to take, but small enough not to have to buy too many for a regular trip. They are costly when you have to get several.

The best part is the little green line that they put on scenic roads. You can even tell which side of the car will see the view. We have planned many trips with these just based on the little squiggly green roads around lakes, etc. It gets you off the beaten path. No GPS shows you the grand picture from point A to point B. I like use AAA's Europe planning map to see the whole region and plan a rough general country to see. I wouldn't use anything larger/smaller than the scale of these 1:400,000. 1:1,000,000 which is what many maps are is way to small to navigate with. Most of the "fun" green roads don't show up. There are some 1:250,000 maps available, but at this detail, you would need 15 to cover Italy if they existed. We are for the first time bringing along a GPS just to zero in on our hotels or if we get lost- but NOT to tour with. Happy travels.

Good accuracy when used in Oct. 2008. Surpassed only by our Garmin GPS during our road trips.
