The map came pr-rolled in a very large Amazon box; really a waste of packaging, as they could've used a USPS "triangle" poster box.

The map is of very high quality and based on my measurements, its dimensions are: 4.5ft by 3.5ft. Make sure you have enough wall space!

This is by far the best priced map I've seen on the market, AND it is a phenomenal quality map. The map has unique features such as latitude and longitude markings on the side, fine detail of topography, countries & cities marked with text - and color separated, a time zone section showing the IDL, as well as all the flags of the countries of the world. This map is large and should be considered when buying that you have a wall large enough to display it. The map also comes laminated, with about 1/2" border of laminate around the edge, which is great for mounting it on the wall with a staple gun. I bought this map for my son about 10 years ago, which hangs on his wall. A friend of mine thought it was the best she'd ever seen as well, so I helped her find it on Amazon so she could get one for her family. She had been looking all over the internet for a good quality map, but most of them were smaller, and about double the price of this one. This is the best map, at the best price.

[2014 update: an Amazon customer just wrote me to let me know the map no longer has the ½" extra laminate around the edge].

I was hesitant to buy this since I saw two Jan.'13 and one Dec.'12 reviews that each said this map is not laminated. Well, I don't know why those reviews are associated with this map. If you look at the product name right above each of those reviews, you'll see that each of those pertained to map 12701, and this is map 13701. So, while I was pretty confident due to the map number difference I noticed, I was relieved when I opened the package and found that the lamination was there and just fine.

Now, as to the map itself ... one thing I look for in a world map is that it have some approach for de-emphasizing the spreading out that occurs in 2-dimensional world maps toward the poles. You've seen maps where Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and Russia each look like they're being presented via a carnival mirror. That's something that a globe, in all its spherical wonderfulness, handles perfectly well, and it's a challenge to deal with on a 2D basis. Most world maps just give in and bloat those regions near the poles. This map? Well, it makes some effort. Those regions are expanded, but the presentation does as good a job as might reasonably be done for a 2D map that still presents the geography on a continual basis (rather than segregating the far north and far south regions into separate areas). And, while the arctic regions are huge on the main map, separate views of those shown in the map's lower left rectify that.

Country borders are clear due to a decent use of colors, although it's a bit too pastel. Use of some more primary colors would help make boundaries more distinct. Large-ish cities are represented by white dots, and world capitals are rep'd by black dots, a nice touch. So too is a presentation of time zones in the map's lower right.

Easy to read. Plenty of detail to make it interesting. Does not contain any foo foo information or graphics plastered all over it. Works well for my 8 year old to look up places he hears about on the news.

This map is very cool!!! I am terrible at geography and have been wanting a good map for my office to study during downtime. This map is brightly colored, nice looking, and has many great features that you can't clearly see in the product picture.
*Lists country and state/province/territory capitals.
*Lists populations and other fun facts near country flags which line top/bottom.
*Grid locations near flags so you can quickly locate a country on the map.
As others have commented, it IS very large, so make sure you have room for it!
My one complaint is that the laminate is a little cheaper than I expected... a pushpin accidentally tore through the corner with very little tugging when I was putting it up. Still, it's not terrible and a very very nice map for this price!
I'm even buying another one to put up in my home office.

Another comment: Amazon has alternately listed as "available in 1 week, available in 1-2 months, available March XX" as I researched maps over the past week and a half. I ended up ordering it direct from Amazon anyway (because the sellers gave me really lame emails responses when I had questions, and I was more comfortable with the speed/efficiency of a return through Amazon themselves if it had been necessary) and it ended up shipping within a day or two and was here within a week.
Great product, and great service from Amazon as usual!

looks really nice, good size, very reasonable price.

laminated surface not only allows writing with white board pens, but also prevents the map from sagging!
the latter is a welcome "side effect" - in the past I usually had to re-tighten unsightly sagged maps after a while, creating additional holes in the map and/or the wall.
Not so with this one.
