I never understand the hype about Michelle Obama's style until now,
By Kennesha "I'm 22 years old" (Dallas Tx) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Michelle Style: Celebrating the First Lady of Fashion (Hardcover)
Well, Mandi Norwood wrote this book in a positive tone. I checked this book out at my college library and I do not plan to buy it. I never understood the hype about Mrs. Obama's style until now. I thought her style was just overrated. She dresses okay and I'm not a big fan of her overrated Black Market black and white floral dress, V-neck shifts or sheaths, or floral brooches she adds to her outfit. I'm not degrading Mrs. Obama. Most of her choices of colors are nice. I liked the floral dress she worn with the silver ballet flats, the Thakoon's floral dress, and the white Jason Wu's white one shoulder gown she worn at the inauguration. I liked the fact she mainly supported mass produced fashions and unknown designers instead of well-known designers. Her style isn't high maintenance, kind of over the top, or ostentatious like celebrities and Jackie Kennedy. Michelle's style is more and relatable to real women who are the majority group (not the minority groups) and moms who are either housewives or work who received an income maybe $80,000-$300,000 a year. I just don't get why people think $60-$200 dresses, skirts, blouses, or cardigans are affordable for the average American woman, in what perspective? I admire Mrs. Obama confidence to wear whatever she wants despite her body shape. (Their nothing wrong with her body shape, she has a nice shape). It's refreshing she's a normal person and don't live life what fashion critics says what you suppose to wear and what not to wear in body shape or in season. I think women should stop trying be something that they are not, avoid wear this because I don't have that kind of high fashion model body or color is for young women. Life is too short to be that self-conscious. Enjoy fashion and enjoy life, that what Mrs. Obama had taught me.

Great book! Details about Michelle's style and her clothes. How she can take a simple inexpensive dress from H&M that cost $35.00, add a snazzy designer belt and look like a million bucks! I hope we see more books on her style because I think she is unique in her choices and is not dictated by fashion. Yes, I know, Michelle is a brilliant woman in her own right, and I don't want that minimized, but it's nice to have a First Lady in the WH again who appreciates clothes and the message they can send. There are two other ladies who understood that; Jacqueline Kennedy and Princess Diana. Now it's Michelle Obama!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book about Mrs. Obama's "style". I like the fact that the author acknowledges that sometimes Mrs. Obama's style is not appealing to everyone, but Mrs. Obama wears her choices "confidently" well. This book enhances the reality that Mrs. Obama is classy as well as down-to-earth when it comes to dressing herself and her family. I enjoyed the sincere comments from the fashion designers/experts. I give kudos to the author as well. This writing enables the reader to get to know Mrs. Obama just a little bit better. Learning more about someone's fashion does that. Very enjoyable reading.

Michelle O,

I loved the respect and admiration that the World's top designers were giving to Michelle. It wasn't kissing-up it was really, "This lady knows her stuff." I also appreciated when the author gave helpful hints on how to update your wardrobe with the use of colors, patterns and accesories.
Love her, Mecca of Atlanta

I got both this book and "Michelle Obama First Lady of Fashion and Style" by Swimmer. About 70% of the material seems like overlap, but they chose pictures of her in slightly different poses. This book has smaller photos, but more information on where to buy the outfits than Swimmer's book. That said, I am very glad that I bought both of them, as I have managed to assemble a wardrobe that largely copies this fashion icon.

We get to meet Mrs Obama in a lovely way! It not based on her husband, but on her style. Just like Jackie O is known for her little pill hats and great taste, Michelle has been moving up the ranks these days as a first lady with great taste.
I enjoy seeing her in this setting, and honestly who doesn't make some sort of opinion based on what she wears. I liked the way it started off with describing her childhood and that her "parents taught her about confidence from within." I like the pictures in the book and the fact they pointed out she wore designer look-alikes that were even priced in a range that we can afford instead of spending outrageously. I do like that they don't try and make her look younger, but appreciate her for being her age and size. Being almost 6 foot she really does stand out. I like that they promote her natural beauty and that she doesn't go overboard on her make up. A few things that bothered me, there were several pictures that just were not flattering. (wrinkled clothing that was obvious or her hair doing a bit out of place.) and I only mention that b/c it is a fashion book and I would think they would have picked the most flattering pictures. Some of them were too plain as well.. there was one where she was wearing blue pants and a tee-shirt with a yellow blazer, and honestly .. well ... It just made me think oh ya, she's human like the rest of us. The other thing was that this book went on and on about her; too much idolizing in my opinion. I found it a bit precocious to be putting her as a fashion icon seeing their term has just begun; let her be there a bit and see how it holds up. All in all, it is a nice little book that can give you some fashion pointers regardless of skin color, and if your a Michelle fan, you'll enjoy it even more!

a fashionista trying to bilk money from women, esp. minority women,

this woman knows NoThing about style -
style is based on the authenticity of the person...and most of michelle's outfits have been completely wrong on her - wrong colors, wrong silhouettes, she's advised to be gimmicky with multiple brooches, etc and just ends up not looking like the classy woman with classic values that she is - style is not someone being a mannequin or paper doll playing Dress Up and trying to draw attention to oneself... style is NOT promoting a pretty useless industry that tries to convince women that they need new outfits to feel good or for a lift or to attract a guy...especially in America, we all have jam-packed closets and drawers and Nothing To Wear - almost No One looks very good - most people don't know how to dress - and don't have a true friend who'll help them by at least giving feedback on what looks AWFUL,not flattering on them - this book isn't even worth the $3 used price plus shipping - by a woman trying to get "free media" promoting herself - and make money off the backs of women and girls who can't afford to waste $20 or even $4 on this - better just to google michelle obama style and check out the photos for free - and make up your own mind on what looks flattering and what does NOT... |
