Anyone who loves monsters has to love Linda Godfrey's work. While other writers argue about the Patterson-Gimlin film or re-re-re-investigate Roswell, Ms Godfrey collects the freshest encounters with werewolves (WEREWOLVES!) and presents them in an engaging style that can be enjoyed by the casual reader or hardcore paranormalist. The stories range from funny, to bizarre, to actually quite scary, and it's worth remembering that they did not happen in 18th century France but 21st century America.

I strongly recommend THE MICHIGAN DOGMAN for anyone interested in cryptozoology, apparitions, modern folklore, or the simple pleasure of a good read.

It was up in Michigan's Saginaw Bay area, on Lake Huron, west of the city of Oscosa. It was November of 1977 and the hunter was out in a jack pine forest, staking out a deer trail around 2:00 pm in the afternoon. He was up there with some hunting buddies, but all of them were spread out in the woods, locomoting on on 4-wheeler ATVs.

OUR boy was on his own.

This hunter sat watching and waiting and started hearing noises in the woods behind him. What WAS that? Deer? Something else? He turned to scan his surroundings.

Approaching him was a "form' a good seven feet high---an amorphous "something" that was largely TRANSLUCENT. It looked, the hunter later stated, just like a partially visible 'thing' right out of the movie "Predator".


Alarmed, the hunter fired at it----six rounds from his .30-.06 rifle---which seemed to do nothing to it.

It came on.

Next the hunter jerked out his .357 magnum handgun and fired off EIGHTEEN rounds at the thing----3 full speed-loader cylinders.

NOTHING.

His blood pounding, the hunter scarcely knew what to do, but then he heard ATV engines rumbling through the woods and knew his buds had heard all the shooting and were on the way. In a moment the unknown thing was gone, vanished, and the terrified--though now relieved---hunter was on his knees losing his lunch.

Then there was the rural farm in Iosco County, Michigan, where New Year's Eve of 2006-2007 found a family all down with flu except the mother, who was playing nurse and housekeeper for everyone in the household.

And after dark, it was the mother who headed out into the farmyard to shut the door to the henhouse to protect the chickens from the depredations of coyotes in the night.

And it was this mother who encountered a great, night-black SOMETHING out there;
a blazing eyed jet black mystery whatsit---that might have had a canine-like head--- that rose up from under a tree and began gliding towards her. Something that seemed to have been WAITING on her...

In Kansas, on an abandoned military base, two boys make regular visits to an empty weapons silo, forty feet high, that is the home to hundreds of pigeons.
They catch pigeons here and then sell them to make "extra bucks" now and then.

But not tonight, they won't.

On this night they spot something bizarre up on top of that storage silo. It is a snarling, growling thing that looks like a combination of a man and a dog--or a wolf. It is something that seems to radiate Evil and its presence frightens the two teen boys away.

Later, in the daytime, the two boys return to the silo and go inside it to find unmitigated horror awaiting them. The helpless pigeons inside have been slaughtered---literally torn to pieces, many with their heads popped off.

But who, or what, would do such a horrendously cruel thing? The boys have no doubt as to the "who" the prepetrator was; it is their "take" that it was this wolf-man thing they saw previously.

And it was obvious that this killing was not about food or hunger. This was about pure malicious meanness.

In Alabama, a fisherman is trolling for largemouth bass along the banks of a backwater pond off the Alabama River, just himself and his pet pit bull. Suddenly a huge, raging, snarling beast of a thing charges out of the undergrowth and comes wading out into the water---seemingly after the fisherman. The pit bull goes berserk barking at this slavering wolf-man thing and the man grabs a pistol he keeps in the boat and starts firing rounds at this creature from hell.

The bullets don't slow it---don't even seem to affect it. Did he hit it or miss it? The man doesn't intend to find out. He slews the boat around, guns the motor, and "gats the hell out of Dodge". This lack of effectiveness of bullets echoes the instance of the hunter in Michigan, as well as the attempt to shoot an enormous black "wolf" at the so-called "Skinwalker Ranch" in Utah (as reported by Colm Kelleher and George Knapp in "Hunt For the Skinwalker"). being shot by .357 mag rounds had no seeming effect on the Skinwalker Ranch "wolf" either.

Which begs the question, are these things really THERE? Or are they some kind of projected illusion? ("Mandrake gestures hypnotically").

The above incidents are just a sampling of the kinds of encounter stories profiled in Linda Godfrey's newest anomalous cryptid book, "The Michigan Dogman, Werewolves, and Other Unknown Canines Across the U.S.A.". Known already among Godfrey's legion of fans as "Bray Road III" (following "The Beast of Bray Road" and "Hunting the American Werewolf"), this new volume is replete with scads of new sighting reports---as well as uncovered past events that people "didn't want to talk about" for years and only now were willing to come forward with.

This one, like the others preceeding it, is a real Goodie, too. It is full of photos, maps, and artisitic renderings. It is also full of speculations as to the natures of these "things" that people keep seeing----not only in Michigan and Wisconsin("Werewolf Central"), but down through Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia,Pennsylvania,Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, Kentucky (Yes, the famous "Beast of the LBL"--the Land Between the Lakes---shows his ugly face for us), Kansas, Illinois, and "all over the place".

This MAY be the best book of the three, although the last one is hard to beat.

There is, of course, a crowd of snicker-and-snort knee-jerk disbelievers who will pooh-pooh the material in this book. Have at it, folks. The world is full of stupid people and you reflexive scoffers are right in there with them. First off, Linda Godfrey is a SAVVY gal. She is in no way, shape, or form a gullibe, believe-anything idiot. I know from first-hand experience that Godfrey has a critical, analytical mind and a very good intuitive sense of when someone is trying to "have her on". Or not.
About a year and a half ago a group of Middle-School students tried to bamboozle her with a cook-up story about seeing a "booger" in the Kettle Moraine National Forest. Linda analysed this one and decided their story was humbug and got them to fess up to it. As one of the people who helped her evaluate the veracity of this claim, I know full well she didn't "bite" on it.

She also did not endorse the "Gable Beast" films that Steve COOK and Mike Agrusa "cooked" up (an appropriate word choice, I think) and ran on You Tube (supposedly "hijacked" from the "innocent", "bewildered" Cook). Linda, and the rest of us at her Unknown Creature Spot discussion group, never made any formal determination of "what" this "beast" was, though it turned out to be one Mike Agrusa in a camouflage "ghillie" suit, werewolf mask, and a pair of upright ears.

Godfrey addresses the "Gable Films" in this book and outlines how the things came to be.

As ever, Linda seeks to be "fair and balanced" (like Fox news, LOL!) and presents the "maybe they're flesh and blood mutant animals" as an option within, while many Fortean types (this reviewer included) see them as manifested "para-boogers" of some type. Linda lets the readers hear that side of things, too, and then leaves them to their own ponderings. One thing seems obvious here, though, these "dogmen", "manwolves", "mandogs", or whatever you want to term them---are NOT classic "werewolves". There are no hard-evidence situations of people "morphing" into such creatures, no human "suspects" being ACCUSED of such transformations (other than in one "by inference" story from the 1930s), and no credible records of ATTACKS on humans actually being carried out. The werewolf depredations of the Dark Ages and Middle Ages (likely by packs of regular wolves) were horrifically savage and "cannibalistic". Nothing like that seems to be going on today. These are just VERY strange looking---and behaving---"critters" that are SEEN, and nothing more (and sometimes they seem to GO OUT OF THEIR WAY TO BE SEEN). They are said to look "challenging", and "aggressive"----quite dangerously nasty----but they never seem to carry through on that nastiness where human beings are involved. They will slaughter animals routinely---but not people. There is a campground killing story associated with the Beast of the LBL, but that story is apochryphal and unsubstantiated in any official documentation. There are also a couple of accounts where persons were scratched when a "manwolf/dogman" took a swipe at them, but that is the extent of it all.

So are we truly dealing with "werewolves" here? It would seem not. But we ARE dealing with something VERY strange; something about whose identity (or identities) is/are utterly unknown at this point in time.

If you want to get up to speed on this issue, get yourself a copy of this book and hunker down for a darn good read. Godfrey's "PUN-ishing" humor is here in full force and her thoughtful insights are here as well. My advice? GO FOR IT!!! You will NOT be disappointed!

Oh---and one last thing---FYI----Linda was distressed of late when, after this book manuscript had already gone to the publishers and couldn't be added to, a
brand new sighting of not one, but TWO bipedal dog/wolf creatures reportedly walking upright together DOWN BRAY ROAD in Elkhorn, Wisconsin was turned in!!!!!
Needless to say, this one had Linda Godfrey OFF AND RUNNING (bipedally, of course)!!!!

So keep it up, gal !!!! We can handle a volume 4 !!!!!
