5.0 out of 5 stars Michigan camper's "bible"
My family and I enjoy camping and visiting the State parks all over Michigan. I have found this book to be very accurate, and helpful. There are easy-to-read descriptions of the parks, and great maps included. Color photographs would have been a nice feature to the book, but the loads of information inside make up for it. I highly recommend this book!

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Since I was planning on my first trip to Michigan, more in the Upper Peninsula area, I must say I was disappointed in this book. If I'd known it was all about camping at state parks, I would not have purchased this book. Plus, there was very little on the National Parks. I also thought it was difficult to navigate.

5.0 out of 5 stars comprehensive michigan state park review, December 15, 1998

This book carefully explains each park, allowing for the advantages and disadvantages. I found it extremely helpful in planning our camping adventures in Michigan. I only wish Ohio's parks were as nice. This book is a must have for picking a place to camp anywhere in Michigan.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4th Edition Is Awesome, July 13, 2008

This review is from: Michigan State and National Parks: A Complete Guide (Paperback)
I have lived and camped in Michigan all my life and this is the best guide to Michigan State Parks that I have ever seen. (Referring to the 4th edition.) It provides an overview of the layout, facilities, and camping options for every State Park and National Park in Michigan. The overview for each park is admittedly not very long (usually only a couple of pages) but the book covers 106 different parks in 262 pages. The reviews generally include a maps and photos. Even though I've already been to many of the parks listed, I consider this an indispensable camping guide.

Contrary to some of the other Amazon reviews (which I assume were for earlier editions of the book) the 4th edition does cover the four National Parks in Michigan. Additionally, many (although not all) campground maps now include site numbers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Complete, Maybe for State Parks, July 16, 2005
By
Overall, this is a pretty good book. It claims to be a "Complete Guide" - but there is very little coverage of National Parks in Michigan. None that I could think of, and that I wanted to research, were listed.

The coverage of the State parks is good, however, if you're looking for National Park coverage, you'll need to look elsewhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost a complete guide., September 8, 2005

A good source for Michigan State and National parks. Good narratives and directions. However, park maps are small with no camping spot numbers marked, this is essential information when making reservations over the phone. If this info were included with the book... a solid 5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good handbook for state park users, July 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Good handbook for state park users, especially if you are not familiar with Michigan. We have been to many of the state parks in this book and have found the book to be a fairly accurate, reasonable description of what these parks are like. The book gives you the helpful info you will not find in literature from the state such as sites ## through ## back up to a busy highway and could be noisy. Not too long and drawn out. Good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Returning Customer!, December 4, 2009

I bought the latest edition having found the first to be spot-on in accuracy. Free of judgment yet very descriptive and informative. I enjoy exploring different campgrounds and returning to the ones I love. I have explored campgrounds not previously considered because of Tom's book. He does not disappoint. Read carefully to see if you are heading toward a busy beach or a quiet, out-of-the-way oasis.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good... not perfect, August 10, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Michigan State and National Parks: A Complete Guide (Paperback)
This guide is useful but not as complete as it could have been. The guide should have explained the financial consequences of cancelling a reservation in Michigan. At Muskegon State Park you pay anyway unless you give them a full 24hrs notice. (As if camping were a highly planned military operation without room for changes.) We haven't used it enough to know if there are other aspects of the guide that are incomplete but this omission cost us $60.
