Editorial Reviews

Remember the boy next door that played records all day, and at night kept you up with songs of his own? He left home one day and was never heard from again. He moved to the big city, living in cheap motels, eating dollar hamburgers, working the boulevard with ex-models, thorazine freaks, transvestites, mothers, fathers, drunks, junkies and punk rockers alike. He struggled during many long lonely desperate nights under the dizzying city lights but made a vow that he would never forget the magic in this world-the things he loved the most: his first fix, his first girl and most importantly...the first time he rocked a mic. Mickey Avalon has done whatever it took to get him to and off Hollywood Blvd. to invite you into his world. And I guess that's what it is, his world...

Customer Reviews

Filled with some actually pretty dope lyrics and infectious beats ..
J Rock
Mickey really has no talent at all and I found that his trio the Dyslexic Speedreaders sound better when they dont sound enhance their voice's.
Vernon R. Nix
I tend to judge a good cd by whether I need to skip a song, and I never do with this one.

Mickey Avalon seems to be quite the interesting figure. If you haven't read up on the story behind the shirtless, tattooed ex-prostitute, you certainly should. Better yet, just go out and purchase the album, which summarizes his life in a nutshell. The album isn't going to go platinum and probably not gold, but it is worth a listening to. There are a couple of numbers worth a few spins. Opening track "Waiting To Die" is strong enough, and from the introduction that states "we are going to have open sexual intercourse throughout the country" (or something like that), you know that you are in for a ride with Mr. Avalon.

On "Waiting To Die" Mickey's flow is exactly dope, but the lyrics themselve, even with some corny lines thrown in there ("$20 gets you Chachi, $40 gets you Fonzi"), it is a fun track, even if it is raw. "So Rich, So Pretty" isn't as fun, but the hook is definitely catchy with the female vocalist chanting: "so rich, so pretty, the best piece of a** in this whole damn city". Trashy? Yes, but certainly intriguing, for whatever reason. The best track from the self-titled debut is none other than the infectious "Jane Fonda", which is perhaps the most "credible" number on the whole album. Here, Mickey counts and brags how he's going to teach you to "do the Jane Fonda". The track is good for a couple of great taglines such as: "licky, licky, sucky, sucky/ Mickey, Mickey, f**k me, f**k me", not to mention "her a** was jamming, like Janet Jackson and the Rhythm nation", "You could see her a** from outer space" or "I'm Mickey Avalon and I'm flaggin' it dammit". Again, it isn't a Grammy winning performance for best rap solo performance by any means, but it does have an infectious hook, infectious verses, and very strong, stand-alone production.

This is the freshest recording I've heard in years. I totally get the web he is spinning. Hollywood rock used to be like this, dangerous, horny, fun, and showy. I've told friends about him and the go "Oh, that gay rapper". If you don't get it, you don't get it. His music brought me back to a time when bowie's music wove a spell that made me leave my parents home at night to seek city adventures many miles away from the Valley. Skinny, sexy, and he loves his mother.

Is this album going to change the world? No. Is any album? Probably not. Mickey is definitely not for everyone but if the idea of a dirty Beck intrigues you, give it a spin.

Those are just a few of the many words I can use to describe this cd. I am not a fan or rap or hip hop at all(I'm a R&R girl), but this is now one of my favorite cd's in my collection(of which I have around 500). Mickey's songs are from true life experiences, so each song is like a story. There are some silly lyrics in the songs, but the beats backing him up are just so catchy, I found myself dancing along, to my own surprise.

Of course by now, you've heard the buzz around "Jane Fonda" which if he was to have a radio hit, this would be it. But there is so much more to this cd, every song is a winner in my book. Please note that none of these songs are life changing, or a benchmark in the music world, but if you listen and take the songs for what they are(stories from his past) you can't help but be intrigued by them, and want to know more about Mickey. I tend to judge a good cd by whether I need to skip a song, and I never do with this one. My personal favorites are "Mr. Right" and "Roll Up Your Sleeves", but as I said before, each song is great in it's own way.

In closing, this cd is so good in my book, that I saw him live in concert 3 times in one week, with one time being a 7 hour round trip drive. Just do yourself a favor and get the cd. You won't be disappointed.

THIS ALBUM IS A MUST BUY!!! I am generally not into rap/hip-hop but this album is amazing. While it is filthy what can you expect from a former drug addict and male prostitute. It is interesting to hear about someone with a not so glamorous life. Mickey tells it like it is and it is vulgar. While many of the reviews on here are negative I would like to straighten on the records. Track 1 starts it of by setting the pace. If it doesn't scare you away with its nasty lyrics it will certainly hook you and quickly reel you in. While Track 3 is the most popular I can hardly say it is the best. It is damn catchy but a bit to poppy for me. My personal favorite is Track 10 which has some great lines and great beats. The beats are some of the best that I have heard on an album and the bass hits are over the top on several tracks. Make sure you listen to Track 69 for a good laugh. Overall, if you can't have fun and get enjoyment from some filth don't but this but if you want a good time and some great music pick it up. I would also like to say that I have met Mickey and chatted with him and he is a nice guy with a lot of intelligence. Catch him live if you can. It is well worth it.

If you enjoy raunchy lyrics set to hip shaking beats, buy this album. If, in your opinion, foul language in songs is the same as urine in your Wheaties Cereal, 10.9-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 4), then you should avoid *anything* with the Mickey Av Flag in it, dammit!
