4.0 out of 5 stars Mickey Blue Eyes
I wasn't expecting much from this movie, but was pleasantly surprised by the clever dialogue and interesting plot. To tell you the truth, I wasn't really expecting too much from this movie, it IS a romantic comedy, but not expecting too much is the best way to not be dissapointed.

Hugh Grant plays an auctioneer who wants to marry his girlfriend played by Jeanne Tripplehorn. The only problem is she wants to protect him from her family, who happen to be mobsters, most notable James Caan.

Hugh Grant's clumsy, stuttering style serves him well here because he is faced with a number of uncomfortable situations. He and Caan do fine work in the movie although Caan's character becomes weaker towards the second half of the movie. Tripplehorn is ok, in a role that only required her to be ok.

The rest of the mobster cliches, I mean cast, are made up of people who at one time or another have been or will be on The Sopranos.

The movie does have some funny moments, like when Caan teaches Grant to talk like a wiseguy, although that wears thin soon. But in the end the movies uneven tone between lighthearted romantic comedy and some violence ultimately keep it from being too memorable

Hugh Grant was at his best as a bumbling, likeable auctioneer who falls in love with the daughter of a mob boss, excellently played by James Caan, in one of his best turns on screen in years. A very funny movie, with Grant much looser than his previous characters, especially when he tries to imitate tough guy talk to convince the bad guys he's "jus one of da boyz." Jeannie Tripplehorn plays the love interest and is a knockout in her red dress. If you liked Knotting Hill, you're going to get a bang out of Mickey Blue Eyes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good., July 17, 2000
This review is from: Mickey Blue Eyes (DVD)
I watched this movie expecting the usual hackneyed and formulaic romantic comedy -- you know, the kind that are made to simply showcase the leading actor/actress (i.e. Meg Ryan, Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks).

What makes "Mickey Blue Eyes" different is the story itself. The idea of a English art dealer who unwittingly gets drawn into the New York mob underworld results in some extremely funny moments. The comedy is actually derived from the fact that the supporting actors , especially the gangsters (i.e. James Caan) deliver their lines with total seriousness. The director does not resort to cheap "slap-stick" comedy.

To be honest, I'm not a Hugh Grant fan -- however, in this movie, he delivers a performance that is perfectly suited to the character he plays.

An understated movie and a pleasant surprise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hugh Grant Provides Lots of Light-hearted Fun !!!, April 22, 2003

Whenever I find an unfavorable review for this film it really mystifies me. This is one of my favorite comedies!! Hugh Grant does his usual excellent job since this story serves as a PERFECT vehicle for his familiar cinematic personna. There are definitely some unforgettable scenes here...I'm talking about the botched up marriage proposal of course, and who can forget the part where James Caan has to teach Grant how to talk like a gangster?! There are soooo many laughs-- never a dull moment and a great bargain for such a fun movie! If you like Grant, this DVD is a must have! If you don't, then you cannot recognize a truly charismatic performer when you see one.

1999 sent out a splew of mobster comedies. I saw this one and said "Hey, why not give it a chance." I saw it and I was glad. It's not GREAT, but it was okay. Not a movie you'd recommend or maybe even see again. It's just an all around, little funny comedy. Worth seeing at least once. Stars Hugh Grant, Jeanne Tripplehorn, James Caan and Scott Thompson.

5.0 out of 5 stars A movie worth watching!, April 22, 2005

Definitely a great romantic comedy, Mickey Blue Eyes, brings to the screen the story of an Englishman working at an auction house in NYC who proposes to his girlfriend of three months only to find out that her family is part of the mob. Things become a bit more complicated when he believes that he can handle the situation...
Hugh Grant, Jeanne Tripplehorn, James Caan, and the rest of the cast, have outdone themselves with their performances, which are exceptional to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows! Very well written and very well presented, the movie is without a doubt guaranteed to provide more than just a few laughs, not to mention a few tears.
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, the humor, and the music are all wonderful!
In short, Mickey Blue Eyes is a movie worth watching and even though it is not quite as good as Nine Months or Notting Hill, it is definitely a keeper! 4½ Stars

I nearly fell on the floor laughing the first time I saw this movie and the only thing that stopped me from rolling around on the floor was the sticky soda and week-old popcorn littering the theatre floor. Not a deep or profound movie, but certainly one worth watching (several times!).

I have been fascinated by mob stories (both the funny & the serious types) since I was a kid. Aren't we all won over by Godfather, Good Fella, Casino, Analyse This, Donnie Brasco, Sopranos (TV series)? Mickey Blue Eyes is a commendable addition to all those offerings. Hugh Grant is at his usual best playing what's he's good at, a charming & stuttering Englishman. James Caan, James Fox deserve to be credited for playing solid supporting roles, Jeanna Tripplehorn adds to the female interest. You would notice a lot of Sopranos regulars in this movie as well, & even the blond from Monica's Closet in a completely different disguise. Many funny moments & wickedly funny at times. Good soundtrack as what we would expect from Little Italy, reminding the viewers that this is all and all a mob movie. I guess the song, "We Are Family" says it all, eh? Recommended viewing.

4.0 out of 5 stars IT'S NO "ANALYZE THIS", BUT FUN ROMP THRU A DOOZY SITUATION, March 10, 2004
This review is from: Mickey Blue Eyes (DVD)
Witty theme, darker than you'd expect and with some dead-serious undertones (Burt Young's character, for example, is *scary* without a trace of humor) but this is totally appropriate in context and gives the movie a punch that many comedies lack. Hugh Grant's comic timing took me by surprise, as did Jeanne T's convincing rendition of a mafia don's daughter. James Caan was actually the reason I picked this DVD up and did not regret it. Very worthy spin for an evening if you like atypical comedies in general or mafia comedies in particular.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mickey Blue Eyes, June 2, 2000

Hugh Grant is a master at playing light romantic comedies with his befuddled charm and you don't have to be a fan of his to enjoy this movie. The rather simple plot is secondary to the characters, all chiches for sure but also well-played by the very recognizable cast. The members of my family had fun watching it, partly because we didn't expect too much after all the put-downs by critics, and we were pleasantly surprised that it was actually quite humrous.
