I just saw Mr. Hart perform, which helps bring this DVD-A in perspective. Terrific, inspiring, mesmorizing. It can send you places. I actually like the material from the recent concert even better than that on the DVD, but the tracks are still great, especially "sweet sixteen" and the last track, which, alone, make this worth buying. The sound quality and the use of 5 channels is one of the best I've ever heard in 5 channel DVD-A or SACD. The sense of space and "air" is incredible and the voices and harmonics coming through the rears are amazing. You get all the power and immediacy of the big drums and the subtleties of the small pursussive accents. If you dig 5 channel, and you appreciate percussion as music and spiritual gateway, this is a must own DVD-A.

Its hard to judge this disc. I have only listed to the DVD-A, I have a DVD-A player. I listened in stereo, not 5.1. The sound is fantastic, Its dynamic, lows are good, highs are good, and clean. I own several of Hart's solo project on standard red book CD, and I like most, and I love specific parts in all of them. I am not impressed with the majority of selections on this disc labeled The Best Of. I would have picked totally different tracks. Perhaps Hart wanted a cross selection of his styles, etc. I believe the CD should hve been titled something else; A selection of...or something like this. Where do I place my STAR rating. Sound is 5. The song selection is 2. I give a 3 because of re-playability for me is low. I will return to the main albums for my best of selections. Thankfully, most Dead discs and probably Hart's solo releases are in HDCD. ( The very best of Jerry Garcia is in HDCD, what a fantastic albumn. So are many Dead live releases.) If you have DVD-A, you most likely have HDCD playback capability, look it up, I believe this adds some BIT depth. This DVD-A is about 45 minutes. If your going to do one best of DVD-A/5.1 mix, you know it's going to have a limited audience, probably hifi deadheads or eclectic listeners. Why not pack that disc full of some extras. There is space on a DVD-A. How about adding one or two long playing epic live jams. Especially, when your kind of famous for it. Seems that maybe this was a DVD-A sampler for record executive tastes. |
