Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The son of Oklahoma farmers and "arguably the biggest talent of his time," Mickey Mantle's legendary rise to fame and fortune-and lifelong battles with alcoholism and chronic injuries-have made him a modern American myth. This volume, a collaborative effort by author and sports columnist Herskowitz (who worked with Mantle himself on 1994's All My Octobers) and two of Mantle's four sons, combines an anecdotal history with plenty of glossy photographs and "enclosures," reproduced bits of memorabilia-a letter from Mickey to wife Merlyn and his first-year Minor League contract, among others-to present a readable, human tribute to this baseball great. Although the book acknowledges Mantle's darker struggles, readers hankering for an incisive look at Mantle's demons will be disappointed; these are warm recollections from men who knew and loved Mantle as both an athlete and a father. This is not to say the book is dishonest, as the tone of the book draws from Mantle's struggle to honor his best impulses: on the last time he drew a capacity crowd, the authors write that "the memories of the airy, vibrant Mick outweighed the sadness. He had said that week and many times before that he wanted to be remembered as 'a good teammate.' In that and countless other respects, he overachieved." The real strength of this handsome book is in its photographs: whether Mantle's sliding into base, posing with his wife, showing off with Joe DiMaggio, watching his kids bat in the backyard, or heading out for a night on the town, these sepia-toned plates (with several full-color images from later years) capture Mantle's winning spirit throughout the decades.

I don't know how many of these photos have been published in other books on Mickey, but the reproductions are very nice.

Okay...I just purchased this and have browsed it several times and read a few passages. This isn't some sort of "Tell all" ..its more of a valentine to the most beloved ball player of my generation. Being a Southern Californian...and growing up a Dodger fan...I still was a fan of "The Mick".

I don't know how many of these photos have been published in other books on Mickey, but the reproductions are very nice. The bonus material or memorabilia...is very cool...letters to his wife....etc..reproduced. Obviously this is a family sponsored product so don't expect any dirt..and who wants it at this point?

Frankly, maybe its my short attention span but the style of this book suits me better than some detailed life story. The chapters can be digested rather easily and in the end...its a lovely coffee table book/tribute. I picked it up a Borders...flipped through it and walked to the register....without viewing the price...

If you are a fan of Mickey...you will not be dissapointed.

If you are looking for the life story....look elswhere.

I got this wonderful book for my father for Christmas and he loves it! It's his favorite book on Mickey Mantle. As a Yankee fan myself I also love the book-it's very touching how Danny and David Mantle talk about their Father. The photos are beautiful and all the little extras are really neat to look at. I recommend this book to Mantle and Yankee fans everywhere.

This is a great book on Mickey Mantle's life and legacy. This is also a 'collectibles' book, being that is has several 'pull out' documents (copies) from Mickey's career. It has his first contract, which was in the minor leagues. A love letter he wrote to his wife - 2 pages long... way to go Mick! And several other items, too. A well written book, great photos, and suprise items to remove and enjoy. This must be an expensive book to produce, so it's well worth the money for any sports fan. So go ahead and get yours. There is also a Babe Ruth book from the same series, which I already have, and that book is also one of my favorites.

I chose this memory book of the great "Mick" for a dear friend for his Christmas present. The cover alone brought great happiness and pleasure; and then, that old Yankee fan savored every paragraph and story. Well written, touching, and enduring.
