Do not buy the sim card from h2o website!

H2O operates on the AT&T network, so if you have good reception with AT&T, you'll have the same with H2O.

I tried calling but after 15 minutes of on hold I just gave up.

I know, I've only had the service for 2 days now, so consider this review as needed. The SIM card and information came quickly and I was set up with a new number, account and airtime within 30 minutes or so. The online site was used up to the point of registering the airtime card purchased from a Family Dollar store. Apparently the PIN number showed as invalid. From there I called the 800 number (from my land line) and was able to finish up using 1st my credit card, then the PIN card after the consumer service guy worked it through the system. I have chosen the $10 minute (pay as you go) plan which offers 200 minutes or 100 mb of data over a 90 day period. I guess because I added $10 two times (credit card and airtime card with PIN) I now have 6 months of service. Imagine $40/yr cell phone service from the AT&T tower system! Obviously this only works for minimal use folks like myself that might use 20 minutes at most in a month for casual communication, but want the security of having an emergency phone when on the road.

FiestaCellPhones was the dealer I purchased this CHEAP sim card from and this was key for my even experimenting with moving from my AT&T gophone system we've used for 3 years now. We had paid the $100/yr and had over 2,500 minutes in the account with no way to change to a smartphone data system. It appears H2O will fill the need at half the cost. So far the reception on my Nokia Lumia 520 has been 2-3 bars consistently and the sound very close to our little Nokia 2320, warbely kind of at times but understandable. We should now be able to take advantage of verbal route directions from the Nokia Here app and get internet browsing when on the road (food and motel info) with the data inclusion of H2O.

The h2o service is a great prepaid choice. It use the att network, and all the unlock gsm cell phones will be fine.

The signal strength is great here at Phoenix.

Do not buy the sim card from h2o website! they will charge for $9.99.

When receive the sim card, You may need to create a online account on h2o wireless first and then choose activate online. You can also transfer your off contact number to H2O. I chose the minutes plan, which is $10 for 3 month, with 5 cent call or sms.

EDIT:

I bought multiple cards for some devices that require cellular connectivity for usage. I had no problems setting the card up and using it at first. I prepaid $10 and used the device semi-regularly over the 3 month period the prepayment covers.

I prepaid $10 again for another 3 months. It was not necessary to check the device so much this time. I might have used it once or twice over the course of a month or two. When I tried checking it at the end of 2 months, the number was disconnected.

I guess because I only used it a few times they felt the number had been abandoned and cancelled it. I only prepaid $10, so they only stole $10 from me by cancelling the account, but still. They could have emailed me saying they would cancel the number if I wasn't using it, and refunded the prepayment.

When I emailed them I received a confusing reply that I did not understand. I emailed back for clarification and have not heard from them since.

If you have a critical device that you have to check only infrequently, you should avoid these people because they might shut down your number and keep your payment.

Original review:

Pay As You Go Users MUST Call Number On Card To Get New Phone Number

If you try to get a new phone number from the website, the form asks for a PIN number that is issued when purchasing minutes. But you can't buy minutes without having a phone number. It is literally impossible to activate the card on the website if you want one of the pay as you go plans.

To get a new phone number you have to call the number on the package and go through the phone tree. That is a relatively quick and painless process. After you are given the new phone number, then you go to the website and choose "recharge" to get access to the pay as you go payment plans.

I got AT&T to unlock a couple of old phones I was no longer using and I decided to use one as an emergency phone for my kids to use. This was by far the best deal I could find. The minutes do not expire for 90 days, unlike most plans that expire much sooner. It was very simple to set up the phone.

I did contact customer support one time to learn how to set up the voice mail. They walked be through it with no problem. They also were fairly easy to get a hold of. I have not had any problems so I cannot comment on how customer service would be if I did.

The SIM card arrived promptly, and fit in the phone, the H2O service worked fine where we needed it (Colorado front range), but it was very difficult to get the SIM activated. The on line activation for the minute plan (where you pay by the minute rather than month to month) does not work without also having an H2O airtime card (e.g.$10 credit). In order to activate and get a phone number, I had to call H2O from another phone. Then, to complete the activation and buy credit with a credit card, I needed to receive a phone call 20 minutes later from their billing department. I did this with 2 SIMs and it took about 6 phone calls in the end. I was unable to find H2O brand credit in either of the two shops wherevthe H2O web site claimed i'd be able to find them.

Once activated, it is easy to top up using a credit card on line.
