Put the Superdrive from my Macbook Pro into it.
Isaac Niebeling
It seems to fit pretty snugly into the enclosure, and even though it's cheap plastic it looks good next to the MBP.
Hirum Horkweller
The bottom of the case is a thin metal piece that snaps into the plastic top.

Initially, I was going to give this product a four star rating, however after looking through a ton of reviewers being pleased with their purchase but rating it at 3-stars, I decided it could use the bump (to each their own, as they say).

QUALITY/MATERIALS
The bottom part of the enclosure is metal, the top is plastic with a reasonably near match to Apple's finish for their products (it's a little darker). I don't understand why they didn't reverse the materials for this thing. You have to break off a couple of tabs to fit in your superdrive, but once that is done you snap on the top and you are good to go! It is not even NEAR as well made as an Apple product (or even a Dell product for that matter), but seeing as I got this from an online auction website for about the price of a venti latte, I am definitely not complaining!

FUNCTIONALITY
My superdrive was automatically recognized and installed in both OSX and Windows 7, and I have yet to find a program/function that doesn't work as well as an internal drive! For a tutorial on how to eject a DVD with your mac's eject button, read on!

WHY 5 STARS?
- CHEAP.
- Matches my Macbook perfectly
- Works as advertised.

OVERALL
Seeing as the Macbook Air external Superdrive has problems with playing on a macbook or other Mac product, I was pleasantly surprised at this cheap enclosure that worked like a charm! Give it a try - if everything you own doesn't have to be milled out of a solid chunk of aluminum you might just like it!

EJECT TUTORIAL
Ok, so the one frustration with ANY external DVD drive on a Mac is the inability to eject using your keyboard. Follow these steps to rectify that:

Step 1: Open Automator.

Exactly what I expected to get for $20. Had to break off some plastic tabs to get the thing to close right. Also had to bend some of the metal into tolerance.

All of this is to be expected. At a glance it looks almost exactly like the slim external drive Apple sells for the MacBook air, but this is made of gray plastic, not aluminium.

Now I have a working external USB DVD-RW for my 17-inch Macbook Pro. I needed the external enclosure because I replaced the internal carrier with a second hard drive.

I fully recommend you buy this enclosure. There seems to be nothing else like it, and if there was, it would probably by $100 and not worth it. Just don't complain when you open up the plastic bag this thing comes in and realize just how well manufactured REAL Apple products are.

UPDATE: After six months, I can still recommend this product...for what it is!

I am very happy with this purchase as it does exactly what I need it to. Thanks to other reviews I anticipated the common issues and took action accordingly.

The product looks beautiful on the outside and looks very similar to the finish of my MacBook Pro.

The short cable is annoying but can easily be solved with a USB extension cable.

The disc jamming in the drive was easily solved by folding up a single Post-It note about 4 times and taping to the bottom tray to force the drive to fit more snugly on the top as is intended.

works 100% with no problems. People who are saying they are having problems with it fitting properly, not ejecting correctly etc.. Before you insert the optical drive there are 2 tabs in the cover that need to be removed. They have a pair of scissors pointing to them. Break those tabs off FIRST. Then install your optical drive and close it up. It will snap completely closed and everything works with no issues! I would of gave it 5 stars but the instructions DID NOT mention anything about those tabs. I had to do some reading from other posters about that.

Also I wanted to note that it works with no drivers needed to be installed on your end. Windows 7 already has the drivers and of course it just plugs into your macbook laptop with no problems and works. Only thing that sucks is the eject button no longer functions but I've read you can fix that some how. I personally don't care since this thing is used maybe once in a blue moon.

The USB cord is soldered to the internal circuit card, a negative IMHO because it's only about a foot long. It needs a USB port so I can use any cord.

There were no instructions, which may be a blessing compared to similar Chinese instructions. Hard to say.

The top half is plastic and the bottom half is metal with no rubber anti-skid feet. The two halves are fitted together using tangs in the metal half that lock into the plastic upper half. There is also a front and back for the metal base which takes some study to figure out or it blocks the slot in the drive.

There are zero screws holding the drive in alignment with the disk loading slot in the case. Using a drive from a 2011 Macbook Pro, it took many iterations of dis-assembly and re-assembly to put bits of foam and rubber in just the right place to get things lined up.

Dis-assembly to test the fit required considerable prying and marring to get the case apart. Even then it could not eject a disk because the base also affects how the drive aligns with the slot. MANY iterations later I think I have it, but am not sure it's a reliable fix.

I tried the other all-plastic case on Amazon but it is for tray-loaders only. In the end I wish I had gotten the high priced case for the MBP drive at Other World Computing. But at their price it's only a few bucks more to get a Blu-ray USB drive and call it a day.
