GREAT IDEA - POOR EXECUTION
on August 10, 2012
This little speaker is about the size of a billiard ball. The sound quality is OK but nothing special. It has a rechargeable battery, but doesn't come with a charger - you have to supply your own.
It has a lighted menu screen consisting of a bunch of icons so you can set it to music, FM radio, etc. Each menu icon has a sub-menu but it's all in Chinese. If your Chinese is a little rusty, you may have trouble programming the device.
The FM radio is digital. You find the station you want by pressing the UP or DOWN buttons. The radio doesn't remember your station, so each time you turn it on you have to thumb through the UP or DOWN buttons again.
The volume control works by holding down the UP or DOWN buttons. The radio doesn't remember volume settings either, so you have to reset the volume every time you turn it on.
I gave the unit a full charge and then turned on the FM radio to listen to the ball game. The unit lasted only into the 8th inning (2-3/4 hours) before the battery ran down and the radio shut off.
You can insert a USB flash drive into the top of the unit and play music. I wanted to shuffle the songs, but couldn't figure out how to do this. There are menu options available but as I mentioned earlier they're all in Chinese.
Given the short battery life, you can't use this thing as a portable device. You can leave it plugged in and use it as a cheap counter-top radio/MP3 player. But if you're going to do that, you might as well spend a few extra bucks and get a better player. That's what I plan to do.
