Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up?This book takes up where Dashefsky's Microbiology (McGraw-Hill, 1994) left off. It's for older students; it emphasizes the need for preparatory research and contains more complex experiments requiring detailed observations and analyses and more extensive use of lab equipment. The 20 projects are organized into 7 general areas that include how microbes spread, microbes in food, and how to control them. Projects are well presented and organized and include background information, overviews, materials lists, step-by-step directions, and aids to help interpret findings. Safety precautions pointing out potentially hazardous procedures abound. Helpful appendixes about using metric measurements and listing scientific-supply companies are included. Simple black-and-white diagrams illustrate equipment and provide sample charts for recording observations. A useful learning tool.?Cynthia M. Sturgis, Ledding Library, Milwaukee, OR

4.0 out of 5 stars Book delivers on its promise, January 18, 2012
The book gives solid, practical advice for people who wish to conduct microbiology experiments. There are many suggestions for what to study. We made up our own experiment, but we used the techniques for working with agar which I didn't know before reading the book and were better than I could find on the Web.

Why only four stars? The book didn't draw me in beyond what I needed to know.
