Jacqueline Black truly has a way with with words. She has a very readable textbook. I have chosen this book for my Microbiology class. my students are primarily nursing students. The "extra" information she has included in the text adds a spark of reality to the text.

I have been teaching Microbiology to pre-nursing students at intercity urban community colleges for 25 years. I have used Microbiology: Principles & Explorations by J. Back for all but 1 yr of that time. This text has a particularly appropriate readability level for those 2nd year college student's whose primary language is not English... for those who have learning disabilities it presents equivalent information in several learning formats and disperses the material in brief concise easily understandable sections. The vocabulary and scope of this text is as broad and as complete as any book available while its charts, tables and photos bring life and interest as well as currency to the subject matter. Truly, J. Black's text demonstrates the important principles of Microbiology while gently coaxing student interest into the exploration of the microbial world - it does this in a unique way that is exciting as well as thorough.
