This book is designed to enable students to review in just 1-2 days all of the basic microbiological science studied in the first year of medical school: bacteriology, virology, immunology, parasitology and mycology. It has been possible to condense a review of all basic microbiological sciences into a single book because of the new format of the National Board Part 1 Exam. It is no longer prudent to review exhaustively the basic science courses because the new examination format no longer rewards an encyclopaedic knowledge of the basic sciences. Instead, the new exams test knowledge of the scientific basis of disease and the ability to apply basic scientific information to the clinical reasoning process. Consequently, the most efficient way to study for the new exam is: to review only the most clinically relevant material from each basic science course; and to focus on the application of this material to the solution of clinical problems. These two new study features form the core of this text. If you answer every question and read all the tutorials in this book, you can cover within 2 days all of the most clinically relevant information from your basic microbiological science courses. You will find that many microbiological facts reviewed or learned anew will be presented in the context of a clinical case or an illustration.
