5.0 out of 5 stars Microformats made simple, fast, and fun!, November 4, 2009
This review is from: Microformats Made Simple (Paperback)
The book is exactly what its title says, a source of information and code that make using microformats dead simple to use and easy to understand--all wrapped up in the logic of semantic HTML and web standards.

If you care at all about semantic HTML, SEO, accessible data, reusable content, or web design you need to read this book. I suggest you read the book sitting by your computer, because you are going to want to implement microformats as you read through the chapters. It's so easy and the benefits are so clear, you can't read the book and not want to use the information. In many cases you can add microformat data instantly as you see the code examples provided and apply the concepts to your own sites.

If you are teaching HTML or any beginning level web development class, you could add microformats to your course with almost no effort by adding various microformats at appropriate moments as students learn new material. This book would guide you in that effort. If you are a student of HTML who wants to improve your website with microformats, this book will take you there.

This is a terrific book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Micro What? It All Makes Sense Now!, December 23, 2009
This review is from: Microformats Made Simple (Paperback)
I had read about Microformats on many SEO blogs and heard about Google using Microformats in their results, but had no idea what they really were. Lewis' book uses practical examples and clear language to describe not only what Microformats are, but how to implement and consume them. After the first couple chapters it finally "clicked" for me and I had that "ah ha" moment that got me writing code and implementing Microformats on my own web site. I put the hCard Microformat and various "rel" attributes on 300,000+ member profiles and within a few days I saw Google and other sites using those attributes in results. Very cool!

Lewis' writing style is informal and easy to read. I would describe it as "blog-like"... not your normal tech manual. You can tell Lewis is truly passionate about the topic and it comes through in her writing. She really wants to make the web a better place.

I would recommend this book to anyone who has a web site with any sort of contact information, calendar/event info, reviews, or social networking functionality (friends, contacts, etc.).

Microformats, on the surface, don't seem all that approachable. "Microformats Made Simple" should be enough to get any designer/developer to incorporate them into their markup. The abundance of real-world examples make this a must-have book for anyone interested in taking their markup to the next level.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy Read, quick grasp., December 28, 2009

This review is from: Microformats Made Simple (Paperback)
I'm a total beginner to Microformats and just dove into this book in the last few hours, for the first time. Lewis' code examples and plain (if not spunky - but definitely not geeky) English detailing of the mind behind the topic and the semantics of the topic provide a quick understanding of the integration of existing microformats into any html - particularly the beginner friendly. A grasp of html is necessary to make the best use of this text, though it would be easy to assume that anyone with interest in the topic would have such as needed.

The text is easy to navigate and even easier to read, if not surprisingly engaging, thoughtful, and personal. Considering the topic is the best and quickest way to develop shortcuts to better search results in today's semantic landscape, this book is essential for any developer, no matter what they know or don't know about development in general.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic explanation and breakdown of Microformats and their usefulness, December 23, 2009
By
This review is from: Microformats Made Simple (Paperback)
Microformats have been around for ages (apparently) but even as a web developer, I was almost completely unaware of their existence. As our company has gotten more into SEO and bringing our website into the 21st centry, in general, we've been looking at all kinds of new things that can help make it better.

This book helped illustrate not only how easy microformats are to implement, but how much benefit they can be to your company (and personal!) website in general. The information is solid and easy to absorb and the author's wit as well as her professionalism shine through in every chapter.

I highly recommend this book for a great crash course in microformats and what they can do for you and your site. Who knew such a little thing (very low cost and effort of implementation) could be so beneficial.

Emily Lewis' "Microformats Made Simple" does just that! This is hands-down one of the best books on an important precursor to the Semantic Web. If you are overwhelmed with the Semantic Web technologies, "Microformats Made Simple" offers a "gentle" introduction and guide to implementation. I loved the book and its easy readibility!

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes learning microformats fun, May 7, 2010

This review is from: Microformats Made Simple (Paperback)
Let's face it, the documentation on the microformats web site is not very user friendly. But this book makes it user friendly. In fact, because of the author's writing style, not only does she make learning microformats user friendly, she also makes it fun.

The real strength of this book however, has to do with its terrific and explicit code snippet examples. For example, all code snippet examples are printed-out in a chronological order so that you can follow the evolution of how and where to add microformats to your markup.

Because of these wonderful code snippet examples, not only do you get to learn how to add microformats to your pages, but you also get the added benefit of learning how to write simpler, cleaner, and more meaningful markup to your content. Thus, this book teaches you about microformats and how to write semantic(or meaningful) markup.

I definitely recommend this book because its written in simple plain language that just about anybody can understand. i.e., Its not just for code jockeys wanting to learn another web technology. In fact, all that you need to know is a little bit about (X)HTML and CSS and you are good to go.

Overall, this is a great book to have because it teaches you the purpose of microformats, and how using them can help bring value to your documents by encouraging web standards and facilitating search engine optimization. Fantastic stuff; really!

5.0 out of 5 stars Practicality, clarity and semantics, April 20, 2010
By
Clive Walker (Horsham, West Sussex, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Microformats Made Simple (Paperback)
Microformats Made Simple aims to teach you about microformats, what they are, the benefits of usage, and how they can be used in your website (X)HTML. The book starts with an introduction that includes a description of the history of microformats and their design patterns. Subsequently, each of the main microformats, and several draft microformats, are explained in their own chapters. Each section describes the advantages of using the microformat, its properties and syntax, the mark-up you might use, and how the microformat is applied to several (X)HTML examples. The book is clearly written in a conversational tone and it's ideal if you are new to microfomats or even if you have dabbled with them (like me). After reading the book, I feel that I am much better equipped to identify and publish microformatted data in my websites.
