And, it's a pain to clean.
M. Boomgarden
It does work better if the herbs are dry but I have used it right after washing the fresh herbs and it works just as well!
Lacey
Not used to the back and forth motion of the blades, I pushed too hard and the thing falls apart.

The time I spend putting the parts together and apart and rinsing the pieces off is much longer than cutting the herbs on a cutting board. DO NOT RECOMMEND IT!!!! Will not use it again! Do not waste your time and money!

I love this little kitchen accessory and use it all the time. It minces herbs very effectively. My only observations is it works best if you pack the cylinder full (if necessary you can save leftover herbs that haven't been minced) and make sure the herbs are fully dry when inserted. If not, it has a much harder time doing the job. Not sure why, perhaps because the herbs clump together when wet. In any case--full cylinder, dry herbs, and you've got a winner! Have bought it for a couple of friends who also love it.

Microplane makes other great stuff so my wife bought this to try. We demo'ed it today - sad. It I could rate it a zero I would. We first tried to run some dried rosemary through it. Most of the leaves fell through uncut before the first twist. We then made sure the blades were mostly closed before twisting but got similar results. We tried fresh cilantro next - worse. The device balled the fresh greens into wads. The packaging states " cuts herbs without brusing or blemishing", what a joke. I want to see a video from the manufactuer showing how well this device works. $20 down the drain, don't waste your Hamilton.

Even before my hands got so bad, I was never adept at cutting herbs into tiny shreds. Now it's impossible for me...until this wonderful little gizmo appeared as a gift.

Make sure your herb leaves are not wet or damp, and you'll get the most fabulous fine grate. It disappears into my salads, but the flavor is everywhere. It's decorative atop soups or tea sandwiches. It even looks fabulous decorating a sandwich plate!

Makes a non-cook look good. It'll be my go-to gift this year!

Compared to kitchen scissors, the item takes much more time and trouble to disassemble and clean. I could put up with that-- if it worked. We grow herbs, but no matter which fresh herbs I put in the Microplane, it only makes a mush of the leaves, and most of the herb remains as residue to clean out of the machine. It does NOT work for fresh herbs!

This is a great product as long as the herbs are dry. This kind of makes sense when you think about it. It can be challening to cut "wet" herbs with a knife. Therefore, it is equally challenging for the herb mill to cut up "wet" herbs. If you need to rinse off your herbs, just make sure you you really pat them dry to get the mill to work easily.

We have sevearl Microplane kitchen utensils and they are very high-quality tools. We were quite excited when we ran across the herb mill. We have used the mill with mixed results. I give it 3 stars because on some herbs, it works exactly as you would expect (basil and sage) but on smaller herbs (thyme, oregano, parsley) the leaves seem to get crushed or come out nearly whole even if the leaves are not wet. I use a LOT of sage, so I am pleased to have the herb mill for this purpose but will still be looking for a chopping alternative for the softer/smaller fresh herbs.

I love to cook with fresh herbs, and have more kitchen gadgets than I care to admit. So I was very excited when Microplane (which makes FANTASTIC graters) offered a way to quickly cut herbs. However, I was very disappointed with this product. It smushes the herbs, it doesn't cut them. You also have to take the whole mill apart to wash it, and it has several pieces. I can see how this might work for dried herbs, but I was looking for a way to mince fresh herbs. This product doesn't fit that bill. For dried herbs, a mortar and pestle gives a much better result with less cleanup. This mill ended up in the trash can.
