The body of this one comes apart in two pieces, exposing the grater.

It stores nuts, it provides a nice small microplane, and it store any unused grated nutmeg!

It's well made, good sturdy material and the microplane is wonderfully sharp.

I used to have the rotary nutmeg grinder. I paid around $25 for it. The output was so-so, it leaked in my cabinet and you had to make sure the nut was placed in the chamber just right. The handle broke after about three years.

No more! I love this product from Microplane. I have the smaller Microplane rasp spice grater as well, but I wanted this one because it allows me to store the nuts with the grinder. (That's how I ended up falling for the expensive rotary grinder.) The output is fine. A good feature is that you can grate enough to spoon from the container if you need it for larger recipes. I think it grates finer than the other rasp spice grater.

The product is easy to clean -- unsnap everything and throw it into the dishwasher.

This is not a must-have product, but it is one of those little conveniences that makes cooking so much easier. If you don't already have a grinder, purchase this one. If you already have a grinder, wait until it breaks.

Microplane makes the best graters and this little gadget is no exception. It stores the nutmeg in the black area and grates in to the clear box. You get perfect little gratings of nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, etc. This is the second one I've owned. The first one developed a crack along the edge and the blade was starting to get dull after about 6 years of use. We use a lot of nutmeg so it was used frequently.

It can go in the dishwasher with no problem.

Out of the box, I had a little trouble snapping it together but if you carefully push the wide end down first and work your way forward while gently pushing, it will snap together. After a few uses, it's much easier to snap apart and back together.

I own 2 of these great little Microplane graters. One for freshly ground nutmeg and the other for freshly ground cinnamon. I love it for both. The comment that the product is overly-complicated may be true, but only because the pieces fit very tightly together out-of-the-box. After a while it becomes easier to open the various compartments.

As I said in the title of this review, I find the grater to work great with nutmeg (almost too good, since I end up grating more than I need). I guess that I should take advantage of the clear bottom and what how much I've grated. As for cinnamon, it seems to take a lot longer to grate than nutmeg, because the cinnamon bark is much harder than a nutmeg. So, for one I get too much, while the other I seem to get too little, but the effort is still very much worth the effort.

I would not recommend this for anyone who needs a lot of freshly ground cinnamon. But, other than that, it is a great product. Definitely 5-stars!

With the old microplane I had to get a bowl dirty to catch the gratings. I also had to deal with the microplane being in my drawer getting scuffed, dulled, and causing a possible hand injury.

This new little contraption is genius!!!! It stores nuts, it provides a nice small microplane, and it store any unused grated nutmeg! Look at it this way, in one little container you have everything you need to have fresh nutmeg. ALSO, the blades are protected from damage and stay sharper longer.

I love mine so much that I bought two others to give as gifts!!!

Once you get used to it, this little guy is fantastic. The main learning curve is adjusting to the design, which is almost too clever. First you separate the top and bottom halves (doing so takes some force at first but with time they loosen a bit), then you slide out a lid in the black half (which is for storage) and grab a nutmeg. Next, pick up the clear half, the lid of which contains the planing surface. The plane blades are Microplane-standard super-sharp, so even a light touch produces mounds of grated nutmeg. Finally, you *very carefully* slide the planing lid forward and shake the grated nutmeg out.

The main problems (such as they are) are that (a) it's so easy to grate three times as much nutmeg as you need, and (b) nutmegs are small, so your fingers will get close to the planing surface. But those are quibbles -- I appreciate that I can get more of out a nutmeg than my other grinder, which sometimes left about 1/3 of a nutmeg un-grate-able.

I've had one of these graters for over ten years. Alas, it recently broke around the rim so the two main parts would no longer snap together. Ten years of good use from a plastic-and-metal kitchen device like this one is, in my opinion, a reasonable lifespan, and the truth is my haste in closing it likely contributed to its demise.

Nonetheless, I have used this strictly for grating nutmeg, and it has always worked very well, so buying another as a replacement was an easy decision. I'm able to make use of about 90% of whole nutmeg before the end-piece gets too small to hold/grate - hardly a huge waste - and happy tradeoff for the pre-ground stuff from the grocery store spice aisle. And I don't feel that it's an extremely dangerous device at all - one needs to take the same reasonable precautions with this device as with many other kitchen tools - knives, box graters, mandolins, etc.

I like that the gratings can be either scooped or shaken from the little container, and I also like that when it's closed the contents are completely contained so none of the leftover gratings can escape and make a mess wherever it's stored. Count me as a happy repeat customer.
