5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent accessory for excellent graters
If I had to find a complaint regarding Microplane's fine series of graters, it would be that they are so effective that a small slip of the hand can result in a painful cut. This excellent accessory takes care of that issue by providing a slider that holds whatever food or spice you're grating against whichever Microplane model you prefer (coarse, fine, ribbon,...

This may be worth having for a limited number of tasks. I use this primarily for grating smaller pieces ginger and nutmeg.

The two-piece design of this attachment makes cleaning it easy. However, that same two piece design also makes using it clumsy. You must use the same hand to adjust the pressure against the grater while simultaneously moving the attachment back and forth over the surface of the grater.

DOWNSIDE: This attachment won't let you use that last little nub of nutmeg. The "plunger" portion doesn't go down far enough.

COMMENTS:
1. If well-turned out nails (polish, acrylic nails, etc.) are part of your lifestyle, you probably will want to use this attachment for a lot more tasks than than I do.
2. As an add-on to an initial purchase, this isn't a bad idea.
3. Note that this attachment is designed to use only with certain models.

If I had to find a complaint regarding Microplane's fine series of graters, it would be that they are so effective that a small slip of the hand can result in a painful cut. This excellent accessory takes care of that issue by providing a slider that holds whatever food or spice you're grating against whichever Microplane model you prefer (coarse, fine, ribbon, etc.)

The slider also makes grating spices like nutmeg much easier as it provides a handle of sorts to hold the small spice kernels against the Microplane's grater surface. My only problem with the slider is that it's fairly small and thus requires cheeses to be cut into small chunks, but that's a minor complaint.

If you own one of the 35000 series graters from Microplane, you should consider this slider attachment a required item for your kitchen.

4.0 out of 5 stars For Safety's Sake....Buy this Attachment!, August 8, 2003

The Microplane graters are an absolute must-have in any kitchen. Cheese simply disappears into fluffy mounds within seconds. BUT...the sharpness of the blades creates a potential safety hazard. If your fingers come into contact with the blades, count on receiving a nasty cut. The slider attachment is a small price to pay for security.

Hard cheeses and nutmeg are very easy to grate with the attachment although as a previous reviewer noted, you must use small chunks. The results will impress you. Soft cheeses however, are a little harder to grate. The cheese tends to mash against the blade unless you apply the right amount of pressure and keep up a steady grating motion. It will however, produce finely shredded cheese.

That is a mere quibble with the attachment. It will 'complete' your Microplane grater set and you can confidently and safely use this remarkable product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful addition to your Microplane collection, April 4, 2004

Makes getting that last bit of cheese/chocolate/ginger/etc grated so easy without putting your fingertips at risk. If you own the standard (35000 series) Microplane graters, this is a must-have.

4.0 out of 5 stars Of very limited usefulness, makes a nice nutmeg grater, July 13, 2006

An avid home cook that is a collector of both cookbooks and cooking gadgets writes this review. I purchased this product because if seemed like a good idea for cheese at the time. In the 6 months that I have had it I have only used it to test it for different applications. I have summarized my observations of this product below:

Pros:
1. Good for grating the end of a large piece of cheese
2. Grate nutmeg (although I use a nutmeg grater)
3. Grate ginger (I find a regular microplane to work more easily and you don't need to cut up your ginger to use it)
4. Use in place of a garlic press
5. Small size means easy to store
6. Completely disassembles and is therefore easy to clean

Cons:
1. Not useful if you have a big hunk of cheese that you don't want to cut down for storage (parmesan)
2. Interior is very, very, very small (approximately 3 tablespoons in size) requires reloading to grate any quantity

Overall the small interior cavity of this device makes it unnecessary in my kitchen. I don't like to cut chunks off my cheese, as I believe it stores better in a block. It will grate small objects without ruining your nails. I had high hopes for this item, but find it of little use. However, this product is a useful add-on if you do not own a nutmeg grater.

I can put several cloves in at once, and in 5 seconds they are all totally grated. I do it right over the pot on the stove. The only negative thing is that it leaves slivers ungrated at the end - depending on the dish I just put these into the pan or chop them. It all cleans up in the dishwasher no problem.

Lets face it, using a grater can be dangerous but this is great! It has really saved my fingers from the sharp blades. You have to get this if you have these graters!

4.0 out of 5 stars Small but effective, October 26, 2011

I've been using this little device for years for grating nutmeg. There are other uses, too, that make it a keeper in my kitchen. Being a huge fan of microplane graters, I have various sizes including the size for grating nuts and hard cheese. For grating nutmeg, I've never found anything better than this device used with the grater. I don't want to risk my fingers trying to grate the nutmeg alone and with this little gadget I not only spare injury, I can grate the nutmeg down to a sliver, which I certainly couldn't do using my hand alone.

Other than nutmeg though, the small size of this device limits its use to small items that will fit in the hopper, hence the four stars. I use it to grate nuts, peppermints, cinnamon candies and hard cheese on various preparations as a garnish. It makes a dish look professional and 'finished'. It's easy to use for those quick jobs and nearly cleanup free. It would also work well for grating garlic cloves but of course would require more aggressive cleanup to remove the smell. I have a garlic press for that purpose, so don't need to use this.

You just slide the black part onto the grater, add the nutmeg or whatever to the hopper and top with the clear plastic pusher/lid. By sliding the hopper back and forth on the grater with some finger pressure to ensure grating, I don't think you can beat it. I don't think it would be as easy to use if it were much bigger, so I don't complain too much.

It is dishwasher worthy, although I rarely put it in there as it just doesn't get that dirty. Recommended for nutmeg and garnishes.

4.0 out of 5 stars probably works but.............., January 3, 2010

It doesnt attach easily and it gives me the impression that it might wear out soon, the attchment part that is. I have not used it yet but its attachment requires forcing it over two "bumps" on my older grater. I can easily see these "bumps" being worn off so that the slider will no longer stay on the grater. However, remember that I have not used the item yet.

Buy this item, with the microplane grater (fine or coarse) today! This works so well that you will wonder what took the designers so long to offer this!! No more ruined manicures! I will never use another grater/grating system if I can possibly help it. This is a great design and every kitchen should have one.
