Created for one/two semester undergraduate level courses in Introduction to Microprocessors offered in electrical and computer technology departments; requires a prerequisite course in digital logic, but assumes no knowledge of programming. The first of its kind to offer an integrated treatment of both the hardware and software aspects of the microprocessor, this comprehensive and thoroughly updated text focuses on the 8085 microprocessor family to teach the basic concepts underlying programmable devices. Providing a sound pedagogy - from basic concepts to applications - it fully prepares students to apply concepts learned to other microprocessors in higher level courses or to a variety of situations they may encounter in their future jobs.

From the Back Cover

GAONKAR, Microprocessor Architecture, Programming, and Applications with the 8085, 4E/* Revised to include the most recent technological changes, this comprehensive survey offers an integrated treatment of both the hardware and software aspects of the microprocessor, focusing on the 8085 microprocessor family to teach the basic concepts underlying programmable devices. Providing a sound pedagogy - from basic concepts to applications - it prepares users to apply concepts learned to a variety of situations they may encounter in their future jobs. Covers the hardware aspects of the microcomputer as a system - using a spiral approach in exploring and re-exploring topics from various perspectives; introduces programming step-by-step, beginning with 8085 instructions; examines programming techniques, program development, and software development systems; and integrates hardware and software concepts in interfacing and designing microprocessor-based products. Examines 68HC11 microcontrollers, 486 and Pentium 32-bit processors, and RISC processors, and considers the interfacing of I/Os - supporting discussions with many industrial and practical examples. Now replaces DMA controller 8257 with the 8237; shows how to interface a LCD module; replaces the Intel SDK-85 system with EMAC Primer (a stand-alone single-board microcomputer system with a Hex keyboard and LED displays which can be used with a PC); and provides complete data sheets for 8259, 8237, and a LCD panel. Both hardware and software troubleshooting problems are included.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for learning Microprocessor basics, April 26, 1999
By A Customer
I had read this book page by page during the semestre of Computer Architecture course in 1986, but it is even more useful today. Because the book explains every concept on microprocessor with the help of 8085 which is very simple to understand. In addition ,if you have Microprocessor experimental kit (8085 of course) then it is really easy to get the whole basic principles about microprocessors, structure, programming, peripherals and so on. Every EE student who is interested in microprocessors, should read this book and do the lab exercises with an experimental kit. Thanks Gaonkar for this excellent work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very comprehensive, good introductory text., April 29, 1999

This review is from: Microprocessor Architecture, Programming, and Applications with the 8085 (4th Edition) (Hardcover)
I highly recommend this book to any instructor teaching an introductory microprocessor course. The 8085 is a excellent processor to start students in microprocessor theory. Its addressing is very straight forward, while its instructions set is similiar to that of X86 type processors. The Primer Trainer (featured in the book) is a great tool for practicing the programming and interfacing techniques brought forth in the book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Stay away from 5th Edition, January 5, 2004

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
BAD BOOK! Not necessarily the material (although as previous reviews have correctly noted, it's no 5 star), but I would like to address the 5th Edition, hard back BOOK published by Prentice-Hall. My book has publishing errors & is poorly constructed. For example, Appendix G, which is solutions to select problems, is apparently the answers for an earlier edition - they make no sense. The book's binding is falling apart. I've had to glue mine up in order to hold it together. Now this is a new, $100+, hard back, text book! I contacted the local Prentice-Hall Rep. for my school 3 weeks ago & still no help. Save your $ on this 5th edition, if you have any other options, until Prentice-Hall corrects their quality control publishing problems (& until they "step up to the plate" & correct problems when they've goofed!).
