An abyss of information,

The other reviewer was correct in saying this book goes to deep into how exchange 2003 works. The information presented in this book would be helpful to an engineer upgrading thousands of computers. Small to midsize businesses are not represented in this book. This book is good for reference only, do not buy this if you need a step by step guide for a small or midsize migration. Use the microsoft help, you will get more use out of it than this book.

It seems this book was rushed to press with little proof reading of its content. While there is plenty of helpful info, there are also plenty of items that are not technically correct. Many of these can be pitfalls if they are not caught early enough in the process.
For example, the book claims that to execute Forestprep one needs to be a domain admin. This is not correct. To execute Domainprep one needs to be a domain admin. To execute Forestprep one needs to be a schema admin, enterprise admin, and local admin on the machine where forestprep is run. This isn't a big issue in single domain implementations, but in a typical parent/child enviro this can be a pitfall. Overall, this is a great compilation of information that is otherwise difficult to find. I certainly found the book to be extremely useful when used alongside other documentation such as the MS deployment and planning guides. However, I believe the book could use another round of editing and a release as a second edition.

Good reference but not a step-by-step,

The author is obviously well versed in the migration process and the tools and structures that live under the surface. However, the level of detail presented is simply too deep to be useful as a step-by-step guide, which is what I was hoping for. This book will serve as a book shelf reference to backup more detailed walkthroughs I have found on Microsoft's websites.
