Making Learning easier and fun - what a concept.,
By Michael J Woznicki "Michael J Woznicki" (Holland, MA USA) - See all my reviews (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Microsoft® Project 2000 Step by Step (EU-Step by Step) (Paperback)
If you want to find out the way to use any software you rely on the software manufacturer for that information. You find that the on-line help is far more technical than you are and that most of the time the information never gives you what you need. Microsoft has made a living out of producing books that let you learn the application at your own pace.Like so many other books in the award winning and first rate Step-by-Step series, Project 2000 has been taken down to the end-user level and you are the recipients of one of the best hands-on and self paced course books on the market today. 16 lessons encompass the 400 plus page learning material and best of all you work at your pace until you understand it. Quick reference tips are included and each lesson has a wrap up to review the material covered in the lesson. The book includes real world examples so what you learn can be applied as you learn. Also there is a cd-rom with all necessary practice files and if you don't own Project 2000 the cd includes an evaluation version. Microsoft has thought of everything...Another winner for Microsoft and Microsoft Press.

For beginners only,
By Carl N Belack, PMP (Acton, MA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Microsoft® Project 2000 Step by Step (EU-Step by Step) (Paperback)
As someone who frequently uses and teaches classes on Microsoft Project, I found this book only marginally useful. For beginners, this is probably a very good book, particularly when used in conjunction with the supplied CD. However, for one who has a working knowledge of the product, it offers little detail on this very complex application. Unfortunately, in MS Project the devil is very much in the detail.

I teach project management for a living, and this is clearly one of the best resources on the subject. It does an outstanding job of explaining many of the counter-intuitive features of MS Project... and it includes many improvements over the MSP 98 version of the book.

Solid introduction for the beginner,

This review is from: Microsoft® Project 2000 Step by Step (EU-Step by Step) (Paperback)
Not a bad book and a good introduction to the subject. Like many of the other reviewers, I think the book is much more suited to the beginner. I have been (badly) using MS-Project for years, and this book didn't really offer me too many new things. Overall, it is a good book, for its intended audience. Only two beefs: 1) Like all Microsoft Press books it did not give any insight to the common problems that can occur when you use the software, doesn't discuss bugs, etc., and 2) Many important options were only given brief discussion...say maybe one sentence, when a paragraph should have been used. I'm sure this was a writing and editing decision, but it took away the usefulness of the book when I was trying to research intermediate questions and issues of use.

Fresh Approach, New Scenario,
This review is from: Microsoft® Project 2000 Step by Step (EU-Step by Step) (Paperback)
Rather than update Microsoft Project 98 Step by Step, the authors of Project 2000 started with a fresh approach and a new scenario: a film project that provides excellent hands on activities for self-instruction. Co-authored by a Project Management Institute certified "Project Management Professional," which in my experience as an IT project management consultant is a first for any MS Project books since the program appeared a decade ago, Microsoft Project 2000 Step by Step can be a very reliable introduction for those who are new to project management techniques and software. For experts who actually track the projects they've created in MS Project, there are tips on new features such as the Responsible Manager assignment on tasks allocated to several resources.

I am a beginner in Project and I really learned something from this book. It is very well structured and after having read thru it I got the big picture as well as being able to work with Project.

Great book for beginners,

This review is from: Microsoft® Project 2000 Step by Step (EU-Step by Step) (Paperback)
I understand a lot about project management, but being a developer I had never learned to really use MS Project. I picked up this book and followed it from beginning to end, using the accompanying CD-ROM. I learned more about Project in the few hours it took to go through the book than I thought I would.I didn't give it 5 stars as there were a few minor errors (maybe 5 total) in the text, or very confusing transitions in the instructions. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is either new to Project, or has used it but is not sure of themselves. I'm thinking of going through the book again, just to reiterate the lessons.

This is a pretty good book.Covers most of what you need. Would have liked to see the central server covered better. They really do go through things step by step. Covers the basics VERY thoroughly.

Teach yourself!,

This is a great book to teach yourself more than you ever wanted to know on Microsoft Project 2000. This book takes you through STEP BY STEP on how to use Microsoft Project and gives you great samples on the enclosed CD. If only the instructors in school would have made it this easy! Very easy to follow and use. Highly Recommended.

First of all, this book is for beginners to MS Project. You can read this book chapter by chapter, or you can pick chapters to study since there is no referencing for past chapters or following chapters. Easy to read and follow the writers. You don't feel lost in this book. One reason for that is the screenshots (perfect) and little pictures besides the text. for example when the book says "click on Go to selected task" you can see the icon of that feature right besides the text. If you never, ever used MS Project that saves time - you don't need to read every screentip. In overall, you can learn from this book and use it as a reference after that. But after couple projects, I believe you will be an expert of what is written in the book. Just for beginners, as I said, and for the MS Project Core exam. |
