Portable and Good Too!,
By
This review is from: Microsoft Windows 2000 Administrator's Pocket Consultant (Paperback)
At 8 X 5-1/2 X 1-1/2 this nicely bound volume can take the abuse of being carried around in a briefcase. With 477 pages including a 20-page index you should seldom have to resort to your ten-pound complete technical reference. An on-the-road administrator or consultant might find this to be his most indispensable resource. This book is one in a series of portable references for system administrators. The book contains the typical step-by-step instructions with frequent screen shots. The typesetting is nicely done, and, like most books from Microsoft Press, the editing has been carefully done. The author assumes general familarity with a networked Windows, if not NT, environment. It is not a planning or installation book but a daily adminstrator's guide. If your network planning is not complete or if Windows 2000 is not yet installed, you will need other references.

Perfect companion for win2k sysadm,

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 2000 Administrator's Pocket Consultant (Paperback)
This book is indeed one of the best Windows 2000 references (IMHO, the best). While it does not really fit in a regular pocket and does not teach you how to start working with win2k, it comes in extremely handy when you need to know how to get work done as a win2k administrator. So far I have not found a single error in the book.I think the coverage is very complete, but given the comlexity of win2k, some areas are bound to be left out. Suffice it to say that this book looks like it has everything I need to do my job. If you work as a win2k administrator, definitely get this volume.

Microsoft Windows 2000 Administrators Pocket Consultant,
By Jim Clement "ScorchMonster" (Honolulu, HI United States) - See all my reviews

Clear. Concise. Informative. Encyclopedic in scope. This book is not designed to teach you Win2K. It is designed to serve as a reference checklist for most common, and not so common procedural tasks that occur on a day-to-day basis. While I own an ever expanding library on Win2K, I find that this is the book that always resides in my ready bag, so as to be available where I travel. Mr. Stanek has done a marvelous job with this book. I highly recommend it.

A better book nowhere to be found,

Yak, yak, yak. I looked at all the win2000 books; started with Mastering Windows 2000 which everyone loves to talk at. There is no comparison to this book. This book is focussed precisely on what matters and this is so incredible. You won't fund hundreds of useless pages here--only what you need. Mr Stanek obviously knows his stuff and he's not afraid to share.

Serves its purpose well.,
This review is from: Microsoft Windows 2000 Administrator's Pocket Consultant (Paperback)
Don't expect to learn Windows 2000 by reading this book cover to cover. It's not really designed for that. It is better used as a reference guide for commonly performed system tasks. In that regard, it serves its purpose quite nicely providing solid organization and simple advice. This book serves a definite purpose. It's designed to be the book on the shelf that you use when the inevitable "How Do I Do This?" question pops up. It fulfill this purpose well. What this book is not designed for is to fully explain the features of Windows 2000 and Active Directory. There are other titles that do a much better job of that.

Truly the admin bible,

This review is from: Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Administrator's Pocket Consultant, Second Edition (Pocket Administrator) (Paperback)
When and if you find yourself wondering "how do i do that again?" or "how does that work?" you will need this book. Its small enough to place on your desk and big enough to contain all the information about Windows 2000 as it relates to an administrator. This book never comes up short in the help department. You cant remember it all and you dont need an 900 page book to remind you. Pick this up and keep it handy. You wont be let down when you need it most.

2nd edition even better than first,
This review is from: Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Administrator's Pocket Consultant, Second Edition (Pocket Administrator) (Paperback)
I have the first edition and got the second edition immediaetly. With the second edition, Stanek has done a great job! This book is well written, easy to follow and concise, yet packed with lot's of useful information and hints and tips for Windows 2000. I consider myself a fairly expert Windows admin, but still learned quite a lot from this book. Like other Windows books that Stanek has written, this one is excellent for either new admins or experienced admins. I whole heartedly recommend this book to everyone.

Small package, A lot of information!,

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 2000 Administrator's Pocket Consultant (Paperback)
I bought this book about a year ago and have steadily been buying more and more of Mr. Stanek's Pocket Consultants. This book has been a constant companion and I've also used it as a study guide. I passed my MCSE test by the way thanks in no small part to this book. I've put this book that hell in the past year so I found it surprising that the book's cover is still in tact and the pages are holding. The book has rounded corners, a stictched binding, and an extra thick cover for a reason!I continue to be surprised at how much useful information Mr. Stanek pours into every page. I read something somewhere, might have been a review, that said its like Mr. Stanek starts with one of those heavy duty doorstop books, you know a 1200 page monster, then takes out all the useless filler, fluff, etc to get the book down to a healthy 500 pages. I believe this, the book has never let me down when I was in a crunch.
