3.0 out of 5 stars Good small business tool
Found this book to be a very good resource for setting up Sharepoint in a small business. Step by step instructions for most common set ups in language that assumes you have no prior knowledge about SharePoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beginner, November 7, 2007
This review is from: Microsoft® Windows® SharePoint® Services 3.0 Step by Step (Step by Step (Microsoft)) (Paperback)
I was faced with a project that could best be implemented with SharePoint, but I lacked experience, hence this book. It is an introductory book that presumes no foreknowledge of the subject and leads the reader incrementally through the features of SharePoint. The enclosed CD contains an eBook and the files for the chapter lessons. The print and page layout adhere to the proven format that makes the Step-by-Step series fruitful tutorials. The topics include:

*Build your own SharePoint site with easy-to-use templates
*Create lists and libraries to store information
*Add discussion boards, wikis, and blogs
*Set up Document and Meeting Workspaces for easy collaboration
*Share calendars, contacts, and data from Microsoft Office programs
*Customize your pages with Web Parts

This is authored by some of the same experts who have written advanced books about SharePoint, and their knowledge is evident in this lucid introduction. Elementary - as it should be for beginners.

This is a good book for someone new to SPS or for someone creating content. It is not a technical administrator guide. I would have given it 5 stars if they had spent some more time on the architecture overview and provided any coverage on the integration with pre-2007 Office.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book while doing Sharepoint Deployments, May 15, 2008
By
This review is from: Microsoft® Windows® SharePoint® Services 3.0 Step by Step (Step by Step (Microsoft)) (Paperback)
I bought the first version of this book back in Feburary for my 2nd Customer Deployment of Sharepoint. There are several things you may already know about Sharepoint Designer, but I found this book best used by intermediaries; as Reference Material.
For Beginners I also recomend to have and take the time to use the book because there will be things that will make more sense when you are presented with Business Case situations.
I put the book down for a month and now have started a 3rd customer deployment for a Bio-Tech company that wants to control workflows. Now I am re-referencing the book for additional triggers.
Down the road I can see using Data-Sources to create reports connected to Oracle DBs, but there is not a need right now or security access.
Hence the reference material.

If you are the Cheif Designer-Dev of a Sharpeoint Implementation this book is a must have for the miger cost.

I bought this book when I was planning our SharePoint deployment and intended for it to be used by our users who will be more active in the everyday use of the site. I haven't come across anything that a normal SharePoint user would want to do that is not clearly explained in this book. Lots of good content for everyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hands on, August 20, 2010

Excellent beginner book and very hands on. You learn by doing. I have been through the book twice and plan to go through it again. I learn something else each time. I never did get the CD to work but used the software my company has on their server and set up a play site to walk through the exercises in the book. Although I use Windows 2003 and the book is geared towards Windows 2007, it was still very valuable as it points out the differences. I am ready for the Intermediate book (if there is such a thing!)

I bought this book to help me on supporting SharePoint on the fly. So far, it has saved my behind. All the quick, basic, get-to-know-right-away stuff is all in here.

I like the step by step series of technical books and this is another good addition to the line up. Definitely recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars WSS 3.0 Developer to be: very good as a starter, April 10, 2011

To start developing WSS 3.0 solutions, obviously one needs to become a confident SharePoint user first. Reading this book in combination with other sources of information (video lessons in particular) allows me to advance pretty fast. Download and install WSS 3.0 (mine is installed on Windows 7 Pro), open e-version of this book and start going.

3.0 out of 5 stars It was quite helpful, February 26, 2011
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Microsoft® Windows® SharePoint® Services 3.0 Step by Step (Step by Step (Microsoft)) (Paperback)
It was quite helpful in setting up our corporate Sharepoint server. It did suffer from the typical Microsoft disease of assuming you knew some things but not others and giving no explanations of how to do some things you needed to do. But over all it was helpful.
