Any one chapter is worth the price of the book,
By Bill Anderson (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Microsoft Access 2 Developer's Handbook (Paperback)
If you are looking for an introductory book on Access 2.0, this is not that book. Use the MS manual and the F1 key. A lot. But once you have a basic understanding, and want to build a 'good' app, don't start without this book. If you believe that code can be beautiful and elegant you'll appreciate the book even more. The samples and examples on the accompanying disk will save you much more than the price of the book. And you'll learn a ton in the process.

This review is from: Microsoft Access 2 Developer's Handbook (Paperback)
The best book I have found on MS Access 2.0. I originally bought it because it contains information about how to dynamically resize forms. It it a great reference manual and you can check out some of the code at Sybex website.

The Access 2.0 "Bible",
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Access 2 Developer's Handbook (Paperback)
If you are doing any developing on an Access 2.0 platform and want to create better then the average application, this is the book to own. I own three other Access books and the one I keep returning to is the "Handbook". Affectionately refered to as as the "Bible", my friends and I point out page numbers to the solutions we need when brain storming. It covers even undocumented features that are available with winning detail and the disk included allows you to pop the code in right where you need it. Even novice programmers can pick up this book and get on the road to building killer applications.
This book helped me build an imaging system for a client and made me look like God's gift to consulting. Now they buy me lunch every time I see them.
It is a must for the application developer. I can't wait for the Access 97 version

Excellent resource for the Access Developer,

This review is from: Microsoft Access 2 Developer's Handbook (Paperback)
Microsoft Access 2 Developer's Handbook contains information for gaining an in-depth understanding of Microsoft Access 2.0. Especially useful is a discussion of database design, application architecture, Access SQL, DAO, and the Jet Database Engine.
I found the discussion of developing multi-user and client-server applications to be very helpful

The definitive resource for Access developers.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Access 2 Developer's Handbook (Paperback)
When I was learning Access, I went out and bought all the books on the program that I could find, and there were many! That's just how I like to learn. The Access Developer's Handbook proved to be so far superior in addressing advanced programming topics that I got to the point where it was the only book I consulted when I hit a tough problem or needed to get up to speed on an unfamiliar subject. The authors have taken the time to dig deeply into the product and they provide original, solid solutions to most of the problems that any serious developer will face. From using API calls to Security to interface design to SQL syntax to DAO, this book (and its equally valuable sequels for Access 95 and 97) is one that no Access developer should be without. And, frankly, I don't know anyone doing serious work in Access who doesn't already own and cherish it

A must for all Access Developers,
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Access 2 Developer's Handbook (Paperback)
Very explanatory book which takes you right from intermediate level of Access Knowledge to an accomplished programmer. Full of excellent examples which you can import into your custom applications.
I was so impressed that I bought the handbook for Access 95 the moment it came on bookshelves. I was so impatient to buy Handbook for Access 97 that I emailed Paul Litwin in Jan 97 to ask when was his new book coming. I regard Getz as my guru

The must have book for serious Access 2 developers!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Access 2 Developer's Handbook (Paperback)
While all other Access 2.0 books provide only one or two chapters on the advanced topics, the "Access 2 Developers Handbook" is completely devoted to just that.
The discussions skip the basics and gives you, the developer, what you need. It covers all the topics you need to become an Access programmer/developer. It is the only book on the market that pays close attention to these issues.
This book's number one asset is showing you how to write resuable code, saving you so much time in the long run. The sample disk included with the book pays for the price of the book. Provided are many sample reusable functions and add-ins. I have one such function in a client's application for almost 2 years now!
I am president of a small consulting firm in New York City, and this book is what we use to as a reference and a starting point for new programmers wanting to work for us.
The book is very well written, easy to follow, and has many
samples that the authors work through so you can really learn. It is a must have for any serious Access developer

An eclectic mix of advanced tricks and problem-solvers,
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Access 2 Developer's Handbook (Paperback)
Readers should be aware that this is an advanced text. It offers an impressive array of tricks and problem-solvers, focusing heavily on code which is only roughly explained. Very little is included in the way of assistance with general design issues. Thus, for the more intermediate user it offers little.
In fact, the main weakness of the work lies in its somewhat unorganized mix of beginning to advanced topics, often jumping from rudimentary explanations to quite esoteric and difficult subject matter. My understanding is that the book is a compilation of material from an Access periodical, most likely contributing to the sometimes erratic flow of the text.
Such flaws, of course, cannot detract from the strength of the information that is provided, complicated solutions to a host of problems. I believe the work is best taken advantage of by advanced users who know exactly what they're looking for.

Excellent Guide even for Access 95, 97 Developers,
By Doug Childs (rdougchilds@worldnet.att.net) (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Microsoft Access 2 Developer's Handbook (Paperback)
I bought the Access 95 version of this book, and later was forced to buy the book to study a particular Access 2 feature.
I was struck by how much value the book adds. To me, this is more of an in-depth introduction to Access development than any book outside the "Building Applications" manual. It far surpasses that manual in terms of explanation and samples.

If you only own one Access 2.0 book, this should be it,
This review is from: Microsoft Access 2 Developer's Handbook (Paperback)
A ~1400 page book chock full of good information and Access 2.0 application development and Access Basic coding. I've used at least 2 full Post-It tape flag boxes in marking the important sections of my book with colored tabs. This book covers everything from SQL syntax to interface development and writing run-time applications. This is truly a must have book for the Access developer
