I'm someone who's trying to teach herself VBA for Access, and this book was ideal. I suppose for someone who already has a heavy background in VBA, it might be too simple, but in my case, the book taught me several dozen neat techniques for improving my Access experience. It was both easy to follow and highly useful. I couldn't be happier about having bought it. If the book cost three times as much, I'd still buy it. I can't wait to buy Mr. Callahan's next book.

Easy to understand, easy to use, a little tricky 2 implement,

First off, if you are a beginner at programming, this book is great. The book gives you easy to understand, hard to fail examples that walk you through the code and gives you a basic understanding of what your writing. The only time I struggled was when I was trying to implement the code to my own applications. This is the book's only short coming in that it doesn't explain the possible errors that you might encounter. Eventually, I was able to figure out the reasons for my problems, but it took a little time. But I have a few different books, including the VBA handbook and my feeling is that this book does the best job of getting you moving along. If you plan on writing a lot more code, eventually you'll probably want to pick up one of the large reference books, but for learning the ropes, start with this book.

Great for Beginers,

This was the first book on Access that made sence. I had become used to the old Ashton Tate Dbase II, III and IV and couldn't believe how slow Access was for find data until I read this book. You will be able to make fast stand alone apps by chapter 8, and write about 70% of the Visual Basic code you'll need with Access. This book is for beginners but for most Access users it's all you'll need. Developer will need much more but this made me a beliver in Access. The only week point was in the making menu section. They describe how to make menus with Visual Basic, not Access.

A light start to VBA before a more advanced learning.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Access 2002 Visual Basic for Applications Step by Step (Step by Step (Microsoft)) (Paperback)
I have read more complete books about Access VBA, like Rick Dobson, ...Core Reference, which probably make me take a star of the rating of Callahan's. Although I think that if I had read this book before Dobson, I would have rated it five stars and I would have spared some hours on my way to learn VBA. It is a good start to VBA, it is easy to be read, but depending on the application You have in target, You will have to study harder on a more complete book. When You have to start programming an application, it is good practice to have in memory the basics of the language, like a briefing, which the advanced books wont give You. Lots of details make You loose the whole idea, so I've bought Callahan's.The typography (the size of the letters) could have been bolder to improve visibility.

This was my first book on VBA for Access and really got me started. By following the designs and implementations, VBA begins to make sense. At the same time, I have complaints about this book. The font is small. There isn't enough information to follow the examples on one's own completely, in some cases.

This is a good book but I found it to be a little too basic for me. A good book for beginners though...

Too easy - not for professional programmers,
This review is from: Microsoft Access 2002 Visual Basic for Applications Step by Step (Step by Step (Microsoft)) (Paperback)
I just received this book, kind of disappointing. It seems to easy, definately not for professional database programmers.Realational database implementation is not emphersized. Maybe it is good for poeple who never write VBA before.

Wow, this book sure is nearly useless. First, it only give you fairly specific implementations. Second, it does not provide any sort of solid reference for the objects and methods avaialbe in VBA. Third, a significant amount of code in the book will not work as advertised. If you purchase a book on Access and VBA, do not make it this one. And, yeah, I am a database programmer. I usually work with PostgreSQL, MySQL, Perl, and PHP. Access is, unfortunately, the best tool for what I need to do this time. I'll write my own gui report generator next time. MS is as bad at documentation as they are at developing solid applications and operating systems.
